I've always completed the sentence with "girlfriend", though I guess the label sounds so ridiculous they chose not be that specific about it. "Lover" could work too. I actually admired how they made Ronin's feelings pretty clear without never explicit them in words.

I think Tara was either a girlfriend o a sister.
