I imagine Pendleton Ward initially made Finn so young as to discourage shipping, so that no matter who tu shipped Finn with, tu were encouraging pedophilia.

Initially maybe... but he's aging.. both in story and via voice actor... and if he discouraged shipping so much then why create the best ship of all..FINNAME... he literally cannoned it in like three episodes of her appearance...
