He was unsure how long he'd been walking. He wasn't even sure what part of town he was in at the moment. Fin had been aimlessly wandering since he left the school. How could this have happened? He had been so careful after the discovery of his powers, o at least he thought he had been. There was only so much tu can do when everything becomes fragile enough to shatter at your mere touch.
His thoughts were interrupted when he heard sirens blaring and suddenly, a firetruck whipped around the corner. He quickly spun back around to see a column of smoke rising from a building a few blocks over. "oh my god!" he gasped. Fin began to run down the sidewalk, his gaze still fixed on the smoke column. He was able to get to the scene a couple minutos later. It was hell. Most of the apartment building was engulfed in flames. Police were creating a barrier around the perimeter of the building, whilst firefighters desperately tried to weaken the flames.
Fin headed to the edge of the barrier, watching the building with grim astonishment. "Did everyone get out?" he heard one firefighter call to another.
"we don't know. Most residence of the building haven't returned inicial from work yet according to Building's owner. Bottom and middle floors have been evacuated"
"what about the top?"
The other firefighter shook their head. "no, there's just no way to get up there. It's a suicide mission."
Fin had still been staring ingot he deadly flames when something caught his eye. There was something in the window of one of the parte superior, arriba floor apartments... It was hard to see with smoke billowing from most places. He squinted, leaning adelante, hacia adelante to try and get a better look. His eyes widened in horror. "There's still someone in there!" he screamed pointing frantically towards the parte superior, arriba floor apartment. A police officer spun around to look at Finley and then back to the building. His mouth dropped open and he stayed silent for a moment before turning back to him.
"Stay back kid. The firefighters will take care of it." there was a sound of hopelessness to the man's voice. No one was going to be able to save that person he realized. Before he could really think over what he was doing, he was charging through the police barrier and towards the building.
"Hey kid! What the he are tu doing?! Get back here!" any attempt to stop him, he shook off with ease. He put his hands up to shield his face from the flames as he bounded through the entrance to the apartment building. He coughed at the sudden inhale of smoke. It was. Early impossible to see where he was going and a hardship to take a single breath without feeling as if he was suffocating. He got down on all fours and began to crawl. He ripped off on of the sleeves of his blazer, which he tied around his mouth in order to block out some of the smoke.
His vision was better now that he was closer to the ground. He could barely make out the shape of a staircase on the far side of the room. He began to crawl over, getting back to his feet as he entered the
Stairwell. Fin could feel the skin on his arm blistering as he stepped too close to a near por flame. "Damn it" he hissed. Of course it would heal momentarily, but it still hurt like hell.
It took than lover than he would have expected to reach the parte superior, arriba floor and it was a bit terrifying how winded he was feeling. The door would not open when he tried to exit the stairwell, so he was forced to charge into it, splintering the door from its frame and stumbling into the smoke filled hallway. That's when he heard it.
Sobbing. It was coming from a nearby room. "hello?! Can tu hear me in there?!" he pounded on the door and the sobbing only grew louder. He rammed he door open without hesitation, seeing a small figure through the smoke on the far side of the room. He quickly made his way over to the figure who he could now see was a small girl.
"who's there?!" she squeaked, coughing on the thick smoke.
"it's okay I'm here to help you" he respond, his voice sounding hoarse.
"what about my grandma?!" she wailed "she went for help and never came back!" " He barely had time to respond before there was a sudden crash as something flew trough the window. His head whipped towards the fuente of the noise. He squinted. All he could make out was a caped figure getting to their feet.
"... Batman?" he asked astonished. Was he seriously in a burning building with Gotham's Dark Knight?
"Uh no... Robin actually." the figure approached, revealing a boy who was clearly much too young to be batman. "You know, the boy wonder?"
"I know who tu are... I just-"
"Sorry man, but this isn't really the best time to be talking, I need to get tu two out of here..." Fin was confused por the expression on Robin's face. He was looking at him as it he'd seen him before and Fin was sure he'd most definitely remember had he ever met Robin before. Robin bent down siguiente to the little girl and began to calm her.
Fin looked a Robin. Boy Wonder of not there was no way he'd be able to carry him out of here. The kid was half his size. Besides, he'd gotten in here perfectly fine, he was sure he could get back out. "take the girl. I need to stay here and find her grandmother."
"Are tu crazy?" he blinked. "you have to get out of here. I'll find her aft-" Finley simply shook his head.
"honestly I think I'll fair better in here than tu will" and with that he shoved his hand into an open flame to demonstrate. "Damn it!" he pulled his horridly burnt hand back out to demonstrate the rapid healing.
Robin looked stunned for a moment, but then just nodded. He picked the little girl up, moving back towards the window, pulling out his grappling hook gun. He briefly looked back at Fin. "hurry. I don't know how much longer this building will stay up. And with that, both Robin and the girl disappeared from the window.
As soon as they were gone, Fin took off through the dizzying smoke. He couldn't imagine the grandmother had gone far. She had to be some where near by. "is anybody out here?!" he yelled as loudly as his oxygen deprived lungs would allow. There was no response. He wasn't leaving without the girl's grandmother though. That little girl could not be left with no one.
He began to kick the remaining apartment doors open looking inside frantically. He was having no luck and his body was really beginning to object to the lack of oxygen available in the building. His head was spinning. He moved to the end to the end of the hallway and that's where he found her.
The old woman was slumped over, clearly not conscious. He check her pulse. She had one but she didn't seem to be breathing. He'd have to mover fast. He scooped the frail old woman up in his arms and lurked forward, nearly losing his balance. He REALLY had to hurry o they'd both die in here.
He felt along the muro and with difficulty stumbled down the stairs. His vision was blurring now, making it even más impossible for him to see. He was so disoriented now, he couldn't tell where the door might be. Fin saw murky light coming from through the smoke. He moved towards it, hoping against hope it was the entrance. Suddenly he was in the día light once more, firefighters and policemen staring at him with disbelief. He moved forward, trying very hard to remain conscious and not collapse. He'd most likely crush the poor old woman. Thankfully the paramedics rushed over, taking the woman on a stretcher.
Everything was spinning. A police officer looked at him with concern. "You goin' to be alright son? That was the last thing Finley heard before losing consciousness.
