In 1931, the classic horror movie monster, Dracula, made his film debut. It was one of the major horror movie classics along with Frankenstein, Wolfman, and The Mummy. It was later followed por a bunch of sequels, ranging from good, to total garbage. Never did any of them ever live up to the glory of the classic Dracula movie. They tried (Most of the time), but never could they capture the same feeling as the classic 1931 movie. But, the closest we had ever gotten to being the siguiente successful Dracula movie (In my opinion), was Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula.
Now, sadly, the classic 1931 movie was not chosen for this month, so I won’t be reviewing it. Don’t worry though, all tu vampire fans. I’ve still got plenty of vampire cine to review for this año to satisfy you. But, for now, let’s talk about Coppola’s Dracula movie. The movie was, obviously, made por Francis Ford Coppola, who is well known for cine like the classic… Jack, starring Robin Williams. He also worked on Godfather and Apocalypse Now, but who really knows what those are? Anyway, the movie follows Vlad as he comes back to his land to find his wife had killed herself, after a false reportar of Vlad’s death. Angered, he denounces God and swears to come back with dark magic, leading him to come back as Dracula, played por Gary Oldman, centuries later, and terrorizes the country of Transylvania. He ends up kidnapping the fiancee of Jonathan Harker, Mina, played por Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves, because he believes she is the reincarnation of his dead wife, and now Jonathan, with the help of Abraham camioneta, van Helsing, played por Anthony Hopkins. So, so far, it sounds like the usual classic horror film. But how were the characters in this movie.
Of course the characters of Helsing and Dracula were perfect. They were played por some of the best characters ever. I mean, having Hopkins play anything besides a crazed killer after Silence of the Lambs is hard for me to see, but he did a pretty damn good Helsing. Oldman was the perfect Dracula, always managing to behave like the tragic villain would. If I had to choose one bad actor, it would have to be Jonathan’s actor, Keanu Reeves. He usually just seems dazed and sounds really bored throughout. But, hey, if tu could make this guy the main character of The Matrix, and still make one of the best action cine ever, than I can let it slide here. But we all know that the best character is Dracula in this movie… I mean, his name is in the title.
Dracula, in the classic novel por Bram Stoker, was less of a tragic villain and más of a typical monster, killing people for comida so he could appear young and handsome forever. While he was written well and pretty scary, I think I prefer Coppola’s version of Dracula a little more. Instead of being a blood-thirsty monster, he is a tragic villain, whose amor was taken from him and now seeks vengeance on the world, since he can’t be happy and is forced to be immortal, he uses it to kill and drink the blood of those around him. He is a lot más interesting in this film if tu ask me. And this is coming from a version of Dracula who has the most insane looking costume imaginable. Who would have thought the craziest looking version of Dracula would be the best one in my opinion. But he still manages to be scary though. First off, Dracula is based on the Romanian ruler, Vlad III, o más commonly known as Vlad the Impaler, who would impale his enemies, and even eat his cena and watch as people were slowly impaled. Already, being based on a horrifying individual like him is scary enough. Dracula can also turn others into vampires, and he can transform into a lobo himself. He is also able to hypnotize people to do what he wants. It’s pretty scary how he acts so calm as well. But, that’s what I amor about this version of Dracula.
As great as the story of Dracula is, I think my favorito! thing about the entire movie are the backgrounds and settings. These have to be some of the most well made sets I think I’ve seen in these kinds of movies. The settings of gótico horror literature alone are what fascinate me the most, and this movie knows how to make it’s gótico horror imagery. tu have large and decrepit castles, blackened chapels with only dimly lit candles to see, dark and creepy looking gardens. The settings of these places look amazing. They manage to get the feeling of gótico horror just right. It shows tu a place that looks ancient, as well as dark and disturbing. The entire movie looks as if it’s decaying as tu watch it, and that alone is what I amor about the settings of this movie.
Some people may think that Coppola’s attempt at a Dracula movie will never be as good as the classic 1931 version. Me, I think that their both good in their own ways. But, I feel like Coppola’s Dracula was the better Dracula as a character. It may not have had the subtlety and the unique atmosphere, but it still has some great actuación and settings. The movie was good enough to get… well, a lot of things, really. A special version of the movie came in a little coffin, as well as behind-the-scenes documentary and a copy of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. There was later a board game, a pinball game (Yes, that happened), a couple of games, one being on the Sega CD (Oh boy), a four issue comic book series, one hundred collectable cards that had lines from the original script, action figures of the characters. This movie had as much merchandise as the Minions. Okay, maybe not that much as the Minions, but it’s definitely a thousand times más worth your money. If tu want a más modern version of the classic 1931 Dracula, than this is the perfect film for you. Just try not to take Keanu Reeve’s actuación too seriously in this film. Take care.
