Kate Middleton’s Uncle Gary Goldsmith Admits to Punching Wife in the Face

Kate Middleton’s uncle Gary Goldsmith appeared in court Tuesday, and admitted to physically assaulting his wife following a drunken night out, according to the BBC.

Gary, the younger brother of Princess Kate’s mother Carole, left his wife Julie-Ann Goldsmith unconscious after punching her in the face as they arrived home in a taxi in London on Oct. 13.

The newspaper reported that prosecutor Kate Shilton said of the October incident, “Mr. Goldsmith began to shout at her and both parties were drunk, having been drinking throughout the evening.”

“Mrs. Goldsmith said she couldn’t recall how it happened but her husband punched her in the face with a closed fist to the left side of her face,” said Shilton. “She was knocked straight to the floor and hit the back of her head on the floor.”

The couple’s taxi driver, Daniel Shepherd, told police that he saw Julie-Ann, 47, slap her husband. Gary responded with a “left hook” that knocked her down.

Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot reportedly told probation officers that Gary is likely to face a community service order but that she is “really looking at how to protect this lady from this man in the future, so it doesn’t happen again.”

Gary was a guest at the 2011 wedding of Kate and Prince William and the nuptials of his other niece, Pippa, in May of this year.
