Chapter 4: cena and play
Two months later
As the on año mark after Jo's death came and went, Hugh started realizing nothing was ever going to be the same. And it wasn't.
Ever since the event that happened in the kitchen, the time when Rebecca, thankfully, walked in on him and Lisa, almost... doing something stupid (he didn't dare to acknowledge it was something más than that), he have been thinking about her. Lisa. And what she meant to him.
She was his best friend, and yet... he wasn't sure he wanted her to be just that.
It wasn't only after Jo had died that he started thinking of her as más than his best friend. Their friendship was somehow always on the edge, on that fine line between friends and lovers.
And when did tu know when tu crossed that line? No one ever dicho anything about it.
Was it sex? Was it... a kiss? o was it a prolonged stare? No one could really draw that line, and Hugh started thinking he and Lisa stepped it over a long time before.
And no, he wasn't saying they had had sex, he wasn't saying they'd kissed. They hadn't done anything that was inappropriate, and yet, Hugh believed that line had been crossed.
If it hadn't, they sure stepped on it the día they almost... had done something stupid.
The kids weren't sad as they were before, and Hugh started smiling más often. He credited Lisa being around for the happiness finally present in their family.
Their family...
As they all sat around the dining room table, eating Sunday lunch Lisa prepared, Hugh wondered when he had started thinking of Lisa as family.
He shoved a spoonful of risotto into his mouth, trying not to think about it.
Suddenly, Billy coughed, dragging all the attention. Lisa put down her fork and Becca looked up from her plate wondering why the heck her brother wanted attention at that specific moment.
“Yes?” Lisa nodded William to say whatever he had to say, while Hugh continued eating his risotto.
“When are tu two gonna tell us you're together?” the teenager said, not bothering to fill in the specifics of his question.
As he realized what his son had asked, Hugh started choking on his meal. Lisa, sitting beside him, tapped his back to help him stop choking.
This was exactly what Hugh tried to escape and Billy had to bring it up. What did he ever do to deserve that? He looked up at the ceiling almost like he was looking for an answer from someone above.
Rebecca giggled “Billy, tu shouldn't be asking that” she said, her look rather focused on her father and Lisa than her brother. She was saying Billy shouldn't have been asking something like that, and still, she seemed más than interested in the answer.
Charles acted as if he didn't hear anything. He simply continued with slicing his roast.
“So?” Billy asked again, his eyes falling on Hugh, then on Lisa, then on Hugh again.
Hugh stopped chocking, and thanking Lisa for helping him, he acted like he had no idea what his son was asking. In fact, he didn't have an idea what his son was asking. He and Lisa together?
That had never happened. The fact that he was thinking about it, bothered him. He didn't realize if it became obvious to Hugh that he secretly wanted Lisa as más than a friend, that his kids were aware of that as well.
Lisa smiled slightly at Billy “Your father and I are not together”
Thank god, Lisa knew how to answer them. But it was such a simple answer, how hadn't he come up with that?
“Why aren't you, then?” Becca dicho quickly, probably not aware of the awkwardness present in the dining room
Hugh looked down at his plate. Why did they even talk about this?
Lisa kept back a smile “We're just best friends” she told them.
“I think tu should mover in to his bedroom, I want to make a playroom out of your room, tu know, put PS3 in it, pool...” Charles sounded.
If he'd seemed uninterested with the whole talk before, he sure proved that untrue.
“We'll see about that” Hugh replied, making everyone in the room pause for a second.
Lisa was the first to speak, she turned to Hugh, más than confused.
“About what?” she almost whispered to him, as if she didn't want the kids to know what she was asking.
“About Charlie getting a playroom” Hugh smiled at her. She glared a bit, trying not to smile.
