I agree with CuteDiana, it's just the fact that she had fallen in love with Eric, and was just going to leave everything to go to him. The fact that she didn't even tell her family (which we find out in the 3rd movie she was extremely close to) and didn't really think about it, she just did it, and either way (being human/being seaweed) she would never see her family again.
That is selfish, but I still love Ariel <3 She's a dreamer and an achiver.
Selfish? Definitely.
Spoiled? Not really. Maybe in comparison to some of the other Princesses but in general no.
As girlygirlspwn says, her father openly favors her of all her sisters, gives her a lot of leeway to do whatever she wants, reprimands her only when she skips out on her one responsibility (showing up to a royal concert) or breaks his one rule (don't got to the surface), and even then both she and he thinks he's being too hard on her. When one thinks that ANY reprimand for skipping out on their one responsibility or breaking their one rule in an otherwise privileged and free lifestyle is too harsh, you know they're spoiled.
Selfish? Have you even seen the movie? At what point does Ariel show that she ever thinks of anyone but herself or what she wants? She constantly does whatever she wants, whenever she wants, without any regard for how her actions affect others, and even blows them off or acts put out whenever they try to tell her how her actions negatively affect them.
Examples? Again, doesn't care that she let down Sebastian, her family, or the kingdom when she skipped the concert. Doesn't care how her family must be worried or heartbroken when she runs away to Eric's kingdom. Doesn't care that Sebastian risks her father's wrath or the chef's knife when he agrees to stay and help her win the prince. (He even says after he nearly DIES in the kitchen "I hope you appreciate everything I do for you!" and she blatantly ignores him. Of course she doesn't appreciate anything he does for her. That requires gratitude or concern for his well-being, which requires her to care about anyone but herself, which Ariel can't be bothered to do. She'd much rather enjoy the comfy bed she gets to sleep in.)
Ariel is as selfish as the ocean is wet.
If you haven't been selfish at one point or another in your life, then you're not human. You're a robot.
Being spoiled is someone who isn't self-aware, and just seems to make more and more demands on others. They feel entitled to have their own way. Ariel never forces her opinions on others--- and therefore never demonstrates "entitlement."
