I'm rewatching Brave, and though i'm starting to like it, i wonder what would it be like If Pixar did another film like this...

I wouldn't *mind* another princess movie from them as long as it's handled well. But yeah, it'd be nice for there to be more female leads.

A lot of merchandise geared toward little girls is princess themed and it would be nice to see films in which the female lead isn't one. There needs to be as much diversity for girls as there is for boys.

What I find interesting is how people always harp on Disney for not portraying women and non-white characters accurately in their movies, but honestly despite having big problems they do try to showcase them in their movies. Unlike Dreamworks or Pixar, where they just seem hesitant about giving roles to women and non-caucasian characters. And strangely enough nobody attacks Pixar or Dreamworks because of this, hmm...

They are making a Pixar female protagonist with Dory in Finding Dory. I also heard that they're making some kind of movie about emotions that stars a female protagonist. Pixar also needs to finally have a female villain.

Scarletunicorn: You definitely have a point with Pixar, in 20 years they've only had one female lead but it looks like things are picking up with Inside Out and Finding Dory. They still haven't had a POC lead or significant role aside from Frozone and Russell. Dreamworks though, is relatively new and has had Road to El Dorado, The Prince of Egypt, and the Shrek films that have female leads and POC (sometimes both!). With their new film, Home, it looks like they're trying for more diversity. I think people criticize Disney more often is because 1) they're one of the largest companies in the world so they have the resources to create diverse films. 2) they have been around a lot longer and have significant more cultural and financial impact than Dreamworks, whose films have either centered around ogres or animals (with the exception of How to Train Your Dragon). 3.) People are more passionate about Disney in ways they aren't about Dreamworks (or even Pixar). Whenever a new Disney film comes out, people inevitably compare it to previous films, often times great films that have defined the Disney legacy.

Personally, I think Dreamworks and Pixar are just as culpable in their lack of diversity as Disney, but people criticize the latter company more because it's so much bigger and more encompassing.

When I heard Pixar was making a film with their first female lead, I was excited.

When I heard it was a princess movie, I thought, "Really?" Every single movie Pixar had made up until that point was based on a unque, original idea. Then they had a female lead and it was suddenly the vastly overused princess formula??

When I heard she was going to be a rough-and-tumble tomboy I thought, "Better..." But then when I learned it was yet another film about a princess dissatisfied with her life, defying tradition, and rejecting an arranged marriage (Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas...) I thought, "REALLY?!" But I kept up hope that maybe Pixar would make a new twist to this story. Tell it differently.

Then I actually saw the movie. Every Renaissance Disney princess cliche wrapped into one for the first half-hour of the film, then the mom got turned into a bear, and I thought, "Oh no... This is Brother Bear but with Disney princesses!" After that, there was no going back.

No, I'm done. I'm done with the hideously overused princess cliches and formulas. I want to see stories involving girls who are NOT princesses! F it, I'm so sick of princesses!

Digoenes About the female leads, I think that only Monsters VS. Aliens, maybe Croods (I have not seen it) and the upcoming Home (and even there maybe it the alien that is the true lead, is had to know) count as female led films for Dreamworks. The females are clearly secondary to the male leads in all the other Dreamworks films. If you count someone like Fiona as female leas in Shrek films, when she barely does anything and does not have much screen time, people like Jasmine, Esmeralda and Jessie should be counted as leads as well. So I only count the main lead usually.

And the reasons you said are probably why Dreamworks is not criticized but what people do not realize that despite not being around for that long they have made 26 films plus produced 3 with Aardman. By the end of next year they have made 4 more. So 3 films out of 33 have female leads. For comparison the 33th film in Disney animated canon is Pocahontas which was the 8th Disney film at the time to have a female lead (and plus there is Peter Pan, Aristocats and The Rescuers that are bit hard to say who is the lead since they are ensemble films).

Anyway I just would like more female leads and it is a bit frustrating that when Disney are making them they are criticized so much. I feel in a way that beggars can't be choosers and if the films is good people should not nitpick about the female leads as much as they do. Because if critique lead studios make even less female led films we do not get any.

Onyxis: You make excellent points about Dreamworks, I was however, referring not particularly to female leads but prominent female roles. I haven't seen Monsters vs Aliens or the Croods so I can't talk about their representation politics. My point though, is that Disney is criticized more because t is more prominent in our culture and is a global company. They are criticized so much because fans expect so much more. I doubt though that online critics play a huge role in whether or not female led films are made because so much goes into how a movie is made. Animated films take years and are usually based on how marketable it can be.

Unfortunately, film executives (both at Disney and in Hollywood in general), still think that white male protagonists are the key to box office gold despite the fact that literally half of all movie going audiences are female. People are also clamoring for a Black Widow movie despite the fact that Marvel just released their film schedule through 2018 and there is only 1 female led movie (half of the films are sequels but that is another discussion). I don't believe that we should sit back and just be happy that film studios throw out a bone every few years, if people truly want change then they should speak out and also speak with their wallets by making diverse films profitable. Then film executives will listen.

Black Widow is a boring character so i don't care if she gets a movie or not. XDD

I do want female superhero films, but ya know...someone like Storm or Wonder Woman or Black Canary.

A Wonder Woman movie would be amazing! She's already in Batman Vs Superman, if that does well, then hopefully she will finally get her own movie. Seriously, she's been around since 1941 but has never had a theatrically released film before!

Well, a few weeks ago DC announced that they're making a Wondy movie, regardless of Batman vs Superman's success, and it's stated for a 2017 release with Gal Gadot playing her. :)

Leave the line-up to WDAS, Merida is enough. I love her (and her movie), but sadly her movie is kind of a disgrace for a PIXAR movie IMHO. The idea is wonderful but it turned to be too plain and needed more exploration in the characters and background story. About the female protagonist, Joy from Inside Out and Dory fron Finding Dory will already be the leading characters. Also I hope that Violet Parr will be the main character in The Incredibles sequel...
