I know anime is still doing 2-D animation and I say props to them but as for other animated studios it's a dying art. The last 2-D animated Disney film was Winnie The Pooh (the new one), which wasn't very good in my opinion, and that was it. I actually don't remember any other 2-D animated films that came out after that, not just with Disney. I mean look at the new Swan Princess movies, which I don't recommend watching by the way, the original and it's first two sequels (which are really good) and suddenly with the new movies they're in 2-D for some reason. What the heck?
I think it's because people still consider 2-D animation to just be for kids and not for adults. I mean look at the Shrek movies and the Pixar movies, adults get into those movies. They think they'll have more mature humor and that it'll be for them too. One of the reasons I think The Princess and The Frog didn't do as well as Disney wanted was because it was 2-D. It was successful but not as much as Tangled or Frozen.
I think people need to realize that they're letting a beautiful art die by just writing it off as just for kids. Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs was actually the first real movie EVER. Movies before that were just a few minutes long. So if it wasn't for 2-D animation we probably wouldn't have any of the films we have today that aren't 2-D animated. We wouldn't have the Shrek movies, we wouldn't have the Marvel movies, and so on. The first animated movie EVER to be nominated for best picture was Beauty and The Beast, it didn't win but it was still a big deal. People are underestimating 2-D animated movies and need to give them more of a chance because they could surprise you.
I really don't think it's dying. Not as popular but not dying by any means. Look at Studio Ghibli. They've only grown in popularity over the years. And I wouldn't discount animes. That's a huge industry, regardless if it's mainstream in American society. As well as all the traditionally animated television sereis that are still being made. Just because Disney doesn't do it much anymore doesn't mean it's a dead art form.
^What do you mean by simplistic? That's more likely a design choice than any lack of skill or dedication. Most cartoons these days are highly stylized and simple designs are popular right now.
fanfly I excluded anime because besides them you don't really see any other 2-D animated movies. Also let's please leave TV shows out of this and stick to just movies.
