It had always just been my two sisters, my mom, and me, we were a team and no one could stop us. So why would I assume that today would be different? When I woke up that hot May morning I wouldn’t have guessed that today would be the día that everything would change.
I rubbed my eyes and looked at the clock that always sat siguiente to my bed. Eight fifteen it read, I sighed and rolled out of bed. I looked at my phone and saw two messages one from my best friend asking if I had plans for today. The other from my mom asking, if I could clean the house up a little because to her it had gotten quite messy. I quickly typed a response to her, sure. I went to the bathroom and looked in the mirror the girl staring back looked tired and worn out. I looked down to see my mom’s picture flashing on my phone.
“Yes?” I answered.
“Well good morning to tu too. I have one más favor to ask if tu don’t mind?” I rolled my eyes because with my mom it was never just one. There were always five más jobs to follow.
“No I don’t mind. What do tu need done?”
“Can tu do my laundry?”
“Yes. Is that all tu needed?”
“Yes. Have a good día sweetheart.” I hung up and quickly brushed my teeth. My phone rang again I looked down annoyed only to see my best friend’s picture on the screen.
“Hey girl, what’s up?” I answered.
“Nothing, but I was just curious if you’d like to go to the cine with me, Mark, and Grant?”
“I wish I could but I can’t. My mom wants me to clean the house and do some laundry.”
“Are tu serious?”
“Yeah,” I smiled because with Tiffany I always knew what followed this response. God your mom sucks.
“God your mom sucks,” she stated. I smiled.
“Well I gotta go talk to tu later though. hola what time is the movie at?”
“Eleven thirty tu think tu can be done por then?”
“No. I don’t think it’d be possible.”
“Alright well just text me if tu finish before eleven.”
“Okay,” I hung up the phone and began working on the house. I plugged in some música and was good to go. The música was so loud that I barely heard my phone ring another three times. Finally at twelve I finished. I picked up my phone to see two voicemails and five missed calls. Tiffany had called once but the other four were from my mom. Great I thought más jobs and I just finished. I played my voicemail from earlier the first was from Tiffany.
“Hey girl so I’m guessing tu didn’t finish in time. We’re going out to eat after the movie tu can come if tu want. We’re going to Applebee’s meet me there at three.” I smiled and went to the segundo one.
“Kaitlyn can tu do me a favor? Oh my God….No,” then there was a lot of screaming then silence I stared at the message. Please God no. My phone rang all of the sudden, the number unknown but I picked up anyways.
“Hello is this Kaitlyn?”
“Yes. Who is this?”
“Kaitlyn now I need tu to remain calm my name is Doctor Webber. Your mother has been in a car accident she’s hurt pretty badly. How fast can tu get up here?” I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes. I couldn’t breathe and it felt like I’d just been stabbed.
“Please God no.” I cried.
“I’m sorry Miss Nelson. She’s at the Medical Center of Plano. Do tu know where that is?”
“Yes, I’ll be there in an hour. Please don’t let her die she’s all I have.”
“I understand.” Then the line went dead, I began moving without knowing it. I dialed a number not even realizing who I was calling; it rang and rang and rang but still no answer. I looked down to see that I’d called Tiffany. “Please pick up,” I cried. When she didn’t pick up I called the only person who’d answer no matter what.
“Chelsea,” I cried as I heard the phone pick up. “Mom’s been in an accident and I can’t get there and it sounds bad and I didn’t know who else to call and I need tu to take me there. Please help me I can’t breathe and I’m so scared.”
“Wait what?” She sounded stunned. I repeated the story but I only got half way through before breaking down into complete hysteria. “I’m on my way. Where’s Taylor?”
“She went to a friend’s house. I don’t know where. Oh God Chelsea I should have picked up the phone. Why didn’t I pick it up? I’m a horrible person. I’m a horrible daughter. I should have picked up the phone.”
“Kaitlyn shh it’s not your fault. There was no way of knowing that this would happen. We need to just pull ourselves together and be strong for mom. She’s going to need all the strength we can give.” I began sobbing now uncontrollably. I didn’t even realize that Chelsea had pulled up until I heard the car horn blare. I wiped my eyes but it was no use the tears just kept coming. I felt my way blindly to the door and out to the car when I got in I collapsed. Chelsea was on the phone.
“Where are you?....I’m coming to get you…..I don’t care what mom dicho tu are leaving right now… Taylor don’t argue…No I will see tu in five minutos be ready.”
“Kaitlyn pull yourself together.” Chelsea snapped. “I’m just as freaked out as tu are but crying isn’t going to help. If anything it will make things worse. Do tu hear me?”
“Yes I hear you. I’m trying but I just can’t. I can’t pull myself together right now my world is falling apart.”
“Do it for mom,” her voice cracked. “You know that right now she’d be telling us to band together.”
“Okay.” I tried to stop the tears from falling and just as we reached the house Taylor was staying at I pulled myself together. She was standing outside with her black overnight bag over her shoulder. She climbed in the car slowly making the minutos seem like hours.
“Hurry up,” I snapped.
“Why are tu in such a hurry? tu know I was having such a nice time before tu two had to go and ruin it. What did y’all miss me too much so tu decided to come get me?”
“Mom was in a car accident tu idiot. What the hell is wrong with you? tu should be less concerned about what happens in your friend’s lives and más worried about what happens in your family’s. tu know this is your fault?”
“Kaitlyn enough,” Chelsea growled. “We are not going to ripe each other to pieces at a time like this and that was not nice to hit below the belt. Apologize.”
“I’m sorry Taylor.” I looked back to see her crying silently.
“Why didn’t tu just say that when tu called?” She bawled. “Why didn’t tu just say that?”
“I’m sorry,” Chelsea said. “I didn’t want to freak tu out.” The hora that it took to get there was agonizing. Every segundo that passed felt like a cuchillo being driven farther and farther into my chest. No one talked, no one moved, and to be honest no one cried because por the time we’d gotten half-way to the hospital there were literally no tears left to be cried. All my mind could think was please God let me at least say good bye. I can’t lose her but at least let me say bye. As we pulled into a parking el espacio I jumped out and ran towards the door.
“Tricia Nelson.” I dicho to the nurse behind the counter.
“Hold on one moment,” she said, and then went back to her phone conversation. I reached through the glass and grabbed the phone and threw it to the ground.
“I dicho where is Tricia Nelson.” Chelsea and Taylor came in at that moment.
“I would tell her.” Chelsea came up to the window.
“Someone call security.” The nurse called out. I watched as the doors opened to the Emergency Room I slipped in and went into the nurses’ center.
“Move.” I growled. I quickly typed in Nelson and found the room number I went and let Chelsea ad Taylor in and then ran to go find the room number. “Come on.” I yelled to my sisters.
“That was so stupid of tu Kaitlyn.” Chelsea practically screamed.
“I know but if I’d waited who knows if we’d get there in time. Every segundo counts.”
“I know. “ Chelsea caught up. Taylor was running right beside us barely able to keep up but she was still there. Once we reached the ICU I didn’t even wait to be acknowledged por the nurse behind the escritorio I just walked up to the doors, but it didn’t open unless tu had the access card. I ran up to the nurse.
“I need to get into the ICU.”
“I’m sorry ma’am but no one except doctors allowed in the ICU.”
“My mom’s in there. Her name is Tricia Nelson. Please I have to see her.”
“Wait here.” She demanded.

War
I am weak losing strength, like losing blood
but the scene just drags on no one sees me.
I am unnoticed and as the picture fades away.
I'm covered with a touch, a healing touch.
I look at the face, the kind kind face smiling down at me.
I extend a hand but it never reaches its destination.
About this poem: I wrote it last night and its set in Afghanistan when someone's been shot and everyone's busy fighting so they don't notice him and then he sees the ángel of death in front of him and then he dies before he can touch it.
Dedicated to the soldiers of Afghanistan.

Pain Of Secrets
día por day, your corrage
fades and the mask falls
off your face.
People start to notice
and ask if your ok,
the más they ask
the más tu sulk
your heading for a cliff.
Your hurting yourself,
your such a disgrace
and tu should never
have excist.
tu collapes at school
from all the pressure,
people say its from all
the leasure.
Tear drop hits the floor.
tu stand at a bridge
and look at the road
below.
Walking forward,
someone tries to stop
you,
tu turn around and
there stands the
man of your dreams.
He brings tu close
and hugs tu saying
its going to be okay.

King Of Evil
Blood trickles, rain pours
lightning strikes at your door.
fuego burns, children scream,
even más pain as it seems.
Sun hides, darkness shows,
as the king evil grows.
His army growing stronger and stronger
and your living a life of danger.
They patrol the street
looking for something
to eat.
If they smell you,
you'd better run.
