This Is England ’86 has been labelled ‘hands down the best thing on TV this year’ by
Twitter users, with praise singing out for everything from
the cast’s stellar acting to director Shane Meadows’
pitch-perfect use of music. We reckon it’s time we rounded up our favourite moments from the four-part masterpiece, then.

The retro eighties threads, the flowers stolen from a graveyard and the (temporary) heart-warming prospect of Lol (Vicky McClure) and Woody (Joe Gilgun) making their vows. And don’t those orange bus seats take you back?!
The first appearance of Flip (Perry Fitzpatrick) had viewers immediately calling out for a spin-off dedicated to the tracksuit-wearing baddie and his cronies. Choice quote: ‘F**k off with your ginger chips, Shaun.’
Ah, Woody and his adorable parrot-based interactions. ‘He’s the only bloody mate I have around ‘ere’ is one of our stand-out favourite quotes from the boy and his bird’s tender moments, uttered just as the tension starts to boil over between Lol and him.

‘Just put it on!!’ barks the voracious Trudy (Hannah Walters) to Gadget (Andrew Ellis) as she ups her determination to make him into her own mini Clark Gable. Trivia: The actress who plays Trudy is married to Stephen Graham (aka Combo) in real life.
…sitting in a tree… or shagging in a pub toilet while Maradona sent England into a collective fury with his infamous ‘hand of god’ moment during the 1986 World Cup, rather.
Tinged with trepidation as it was, for many viewers the whole series boiled down to when he’d appear, what he’d look like and who he’d be after when he did finally show up.

Final thought (to a sublime soundtrack of Ludovico Einaudi)
You’ll recognise this tuneage and possibly shed a tear or two as you listen to it (it’s okay, we did too). Enjoy, as we’ve said before, with a nice brew and some deep thoughts about life an’ that.
