Like others have said, I think Sam would want Dean to have a normal life but I think something would always get in the way - so he would have no option but to find Dean. Demons etc will always be after them whatever they want so fate would place the brothers together eventually. Right from the beginning this has been so - they are marked (in more ways than one!). So, sadly, Sam would have no option but to look Dean up - soul or no soul. In fact with a soul, he would have found Dean sooner than he did as he'd have known Grandpa was "off"!
