Season 4 was, in my opinion, the most horrifying season of the series so far, not in terms of plot o grotesqueness, but in terms of the story. Sam and Dean were not the Sam and Dean I’d come to know and amor over the course of three seasons. Dean, newly raised out of hell, could do nothing but feel sorry for himself for breaking in hell under Alistair’s torture. He lost a lot of his jocularity and drove himself to the edge of exhaustion to try to make himself forget the unforgettable.
Sam, of course, was the worst. Driven por a very literal bloodlust and a desire for revenge, he forgot everything that was important and let his anger eat away at his soul until he turned himself into a monster. His lies and deceit wrecked his relationship with Dean and Bobby, making Dean feel even worse because he couldn’t stop Sam.
I was happy when season five brought our boys back to us, at least somewhat. I can only hope that season 6 will be a return to the comparative lightness of the first three seasons. Sam won’t be as clueless and naïve anymore, and Dean may not be so overprotective, so their relationship will never be the same again. All I ask is that they go back to being brothers. After all, isn’t that what supernatural is all about?
