It refers to Stand by Me, because they are four characters and they walk on train tracks a lot. It's just a nice reference/nod to that movie. I sure thought of that movie when I watched those scenes.
I didn't put every references to movies they made, because there are tones of 'em. I just put the more obvious ones.
Good point, but I haven't watched ET since I was 6 or something, that's almost 20 years so I didn't remember that... Wow I feel old now xD
