I think they're a parody of the real thing (I don't know if they still make them, but I used to amor them when I was little, "Cheese Manias").

I heard somewhere that they used to actually make Cheesy Poofs because of South Park, but they don't anymore. Someone dicho they had a bag of them from 1998 (ew!).

Yes but, it's real in Canada but not the U.S. and the name is not called cheesy poofs, there called puffed cheese in Canada.
