I've been resisting watching Once Upon a Time in Wonderland because I was scared it was going to be awful. BUT today my curiosity got ahead of me and I decided to watch it. I'm sure most Oncers have seen it already and can agree that OUAT in Wonderland cannot compare to OUAT. Granted, I have only watched Episode 1, but I'm not impressed. Once Upon a Time set a high bar for OUAT in Wonderland. So here's my review of episode 1.
[Just as a reminder, these are all my opinions, I don't intend to offend any OUAT in Wonderland fans]
To begin, I wasn't that impressed with the acting, everyone was good but they weren't as convincing as in OUAT. Throughout the episode I didn't feel like they were building any tension. For example, when Cyrus supposedly died, I wasn't like OH MY GOSH NO (which is how I felt about Graham dying), I didn't really care. I didn't get attached to the character and it wasn't really a dynamic moment.
I also felt like the first half of the episode was too fast, as if it were rushed, but then the end kinda felt too slow. But hey, this may just be me. Speaking of the beginning, I was absolutely shocked that they began in Storybrooke, and that Rabbit dug a hole through Granny's Diner! When they showed Emma's bug, Ashley, and Leroy/Grumpy, I was like, they're serious about this being connected to Once. Cause tu know how sometimes when they do spin-offs of shows they always HINT at it being connected but never quite confirmar it, this time they did.
Anyway back to my critiques, I feel like the the plot is simplistic and predictable. I wish they spent más time with Alice in the asylum, I know it sounds weird, but if they did, maybe it would be easier to connect with her. They really didn't make me connect with any of the characters (that may seem like a lot to ask for from the first episode, but they did it with OUAT). If they did we could really get to feel everything she was going through; understand her pain. But instead we're just tossed a story about a girl who ventures to a foreign land, falls in amor and her lover is killed. Not very much emotional connection. I wasn't captivated por her story, when I watched the first episode of OUAT I cried when they had to let go of Emma and Charming was killed (and I don't cry easily). OUAT made me want to watch and watch and watch until the curse was broken and then watch some more!
Lastly, I just feel like the characters are too typical. There isn't that little special something about them like in OUAT (which I think has a lot to do with the actors). And what's up with Jafar and his Jerry Curl (lol), why is he in Wonderland? Honestly, the only reason why I may continue to watch is for the possible crossovers and references to OUAT. Sadly, I doubt crossovers will happen though because Cora (The queen of Hearts) is dead, and Jefferson (The Mad Hatter), definitely ain't coming back to Wonderland.
In conclusion, I will give the mostrar a segundo chance, and the reason why I don't like the mostrar all that much may be because I was never a fan of Alice in Wonderland when I was little (I didn't hate it but I didn't like it).
