Olaus Magnus, a Catholic priest in 16th century Sweden, wrote the book of Swedish folklore, "History of the Northern People" (1555). The temple was already legendary in the 16th century as one of the few recorded temples to the old gods.

harold The temple was said to have three salient features: a glittering chain of gold which could be seen from afar, a tree that was always leafy and green, and a well into which the priests would dunk living sacrifices. All three are portrayed in this woodcut.
