is often stereotyped as simply a horror flick brought to the small screen. But any diehard fan knows that the show goes much deeper than that. Each episode is a commentary on the human psyche, testing the absolute limits of what his morally acceptable. When transported into a savage world, it becomes survival of the fittest, and often times, what people are willing to do to protect those they love can be devastating.
When you strip away the blood fest, what you are left with is some of the best acting on TV. Melissa McBride‘s work in the show’s “The Grove” episode (in last season’s bottle-episode-centric second half) is some of the finest the AMC-helmed original has ever witnessed. Portraying the once frightened and weak Carol Peletier, the actress showed incredible restraint and nuance to her delivery; not one scene was overcooked or wrought with affected emotion. It was heartfelt and gut-wrenching from top to bottom, ultimately driving a stake through our hearts up until the very last brutal moment. Exactly how she didn’t land among the pool for Best Supporting Actress In A Drama Series is befuddling.
Instead, that category includes Anna Gunn (
).  That’s not to say these fine ladies don’t deserve recognition, but McBride’s omission here is glaring. (But don’t worry, the show itself squeaked out nods in the makeup and special effects categories).
