Henry John Deutschendorf , Jr was born in Roswell, New Mexico on Dec. 31, 1943 to mother Erma Louise Swipe and father Lt. Col. Henry John Deutschendorf Sr.
He adopted the surname Denver when Randy Sparks, a church leader, suggested that 'Deutschendorf' wouldn't fit comfortably in a marquee.
Denver attended Texas Tech universidad in Lubbock and sang in the "Alpine Trio" while pursuing his architectural studies. Denver dropped out of TTU in 1963 and joined miscellaneous bands.
John abandoned band life to go into a solo career. He released his first album, Rhymes and Reasons, in 1969.
His siguiente album, Poems, Prayers, and Promises, (released in 1971) was a breakthrough for him in the U.S. His single, Take Me inicial Country Roads, made it to #2 on the charts.
After appearing as a guest on many shows, John went on to host his own variety/music specials. His seasonal special, Rocky Mountain Christmas, was watched por nearly 60 million people and was the highest rated mostrar on ABC Network at the time.
John became outspoken in politics in the mid 70's. In 1976 he campaigned for Jimmy Carter, who became a close friend and ally. Denver was a supporter of the Democratic party and a number of charitable causes for the environmental movement, the homeless, the poor, the hungry, and the African AIDS Crisis.
Denver's first marriage was to Annie Martell, to whom he dedicated one of his greatest hits, Annie's Song.
On October 12, 1997 Denver was killed at the age of 53 when his experimental Rutan Long-EZ plane crashed into the pacific ocean. Later, John Denver's ashes were scattered across the Rocky Mountains.
