Serena is supposed to be the main female character, but Blair takes the spotlight, which is really ironic.

loverdrchase is right. It depends on the season. I think season 1 the main male was Nate. Second season it was Chuck or Nate. In the third season it was Chuck, in the fourth season it was Chuck or Dan, but now in season 5 it is definitely Dan.

it does depend on the season cus i feel like dans the main one in season 1 and kinda 2 but the main love is focused with chuck and blair so i feel like chuck has taken the role of the main character, dan maybe important in season 5 right now but chuck always seems to steal the spot light so its a tough one

Like half of the story is based off of Dan getting entangled in the "inside". I'd say he is the main male character, Chuck is a character who happens to be really interesting/complex which is why he has so many story arcs, but Dan is officially the main male. I think Nate is the opposite- he was meant to be really important but his arcs just weren't all that investing lol :)

Dan was written as the lead in season one and beginning of season 2 BUT even before the halfway mark in S2 and things were heating up for Chair, the writters started focusing more on Chuck's character developement despite Dan still getting alot of screentime. Ed has become the shows 'golden boy' and main representative of the show out of the cast (plus Chair is the shows central couple) so ya I think it's safe to say he's in male lead status.

^I agree with this. Although in season 5 Dan gets more attention because of his book and affair with Blair, I think that Chuck is still the main male character. I think that Ed Westwick dominates the rest of the male cast. Or maybe it's just my impression.
