Renly Baratheon isn't happy about 'Game of Thrones' happenings

The Team Formerly Known As Renly has been taking it on the chin recently on

and the man who played the one-time claimant to the Iron Throne isn’t pleased.

Gethin Anthony, who goes from the murdered Renly Baratheon in HBO’s

(Thursday, 9 p.m. ET/PT), is particularly bothered at seeing his character’s former wife, Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer), and his former lover, her brother Loras (Finn Jones) – yeah, it’s complicated – wasting away in dank, dark prison cells.

“When they arrested Margaery and Loras, I was saying, ‘My queen! My man! Are you kidding me? I’m getting angry,’ ” Anthony tells USA TODAY.

Renly’s former guard, Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie), isn’t doing all that great, either, as she has so far been unable to uphold the oath she made to protect a brutally abused Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) during Season 5 of

Truth be told, Anthony sounds upset more in a Don’t-mess-with-my-favorite-characters-TV-fan way than in an I’m-going-to-raise-an-army-and burn-down-your-castle-king way. These days, the actor, who appeared in the film

“I let the weeks go by and then I mini-binge. I now get to watch it as the audience does and it’s really fun. I stopped asking (

colleagues) what’s coming up a couple of years ago. I can experience the shock and sometimes the depression and sadness with everyone else,” he says.

“It was such an extraordinary experience and I made so many good friends on that show. It was just like an adventure from start to finish. I’m very grateful for the time I had on it.”

Although Renly can’t claim Westeros’ Iron Throne, others still can. One is his brother, Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane), who employed the dark arts – literally, a shadow killer provided by the red priestess Melisandre (Carice van Houten) – to kill Renly in Season 2. Is Anthony rooting against Stannis?

“Yeah, a little bit,” he says. “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t.”
