When motion tweening and using models (not just in 3D - remember that 2D digital animation can be motion tweened too), it's very easy to overlook certain details in your work. This can result in characters showing less personality in their mannerisms, or their mannerisms just not being as well defined. It might cause them to show less emotion in their actions (it's much easier for a motion tweener to take full control to a character's body language than it is for someone who is having to draw the character's entire body a few thousand times). Plus, who doesn't love pausing a hand drawn cartoon at juuuust the right moment to see a hilarious inbetween where a character has turned around so quickly they have three eyes and two noses?
This is in no way a rant at Disney's talented 3D animators. Disney's 3D animators in particular are usually very good at paying attention to the characters' facial expressions and body language in every single frame. But like I said, it's so much easier to overlook the finer details when you aren't having to redraw them.
Obviously the main drawback to traditional animation is how time consuming it is. I should know, haha. My college teachers warned me I was crazy to want to continue animating everything traditionally, not that I see crazy as a bad thing though!
That said, isn't that exactly why Disney should be the company to help preserve this beautiful art form? They have a ridiculous amount of wealth and out of all the mainstream companies they are the one most likely to be able to economically support a large group of incredibly talented traditional animators. Both quality and quantity is important.
I also think that, if they put their minds to it and planned it out properly, Disney could house both 2D and 3D animators. I know of some people who are against 2D traditional animation returning to the mainstream film industry simply because they love 3D CGI, and don't want to lose that. That's fair enough. But I don't think they need to stop making one thing in order to bring back something else. Especially a company as rich and as famous as them. ;)
