- Earlier in the day in Michigan, Mr Trump attacked the US medical system, falsely saying: "Our doctors get more money if someone dies from COVID."
- The CDC said there had been 91,248 new cases in 24 hours, with more than 1,000 deaths the previous day.
- The record surge of cases is pushing hospitals to the brink of capacity, with the country recording its 9 millionth case on Friday, nearly 3 per cent of the population.
- The surge pushed Wall Street to its worst week since March, undercutting one of Mr Trump's main arguments for re-election: a strong economy.
- Attendance at the Trump's rally in Rochester was capped at 250 people at the insistence of state and local officials, after 28 cases in the state were linked to recent campaign events. Trump lashed out, saying: "Your far-left Democrat Attorney-General Keith Ellison and your Democrat Governor tried to shut down our rally, silence the people of Minnesota, and take away your freedom and your rights".
