There's no denying that Barnabas has a certain charisma even in his mean and nasty vampire days, but I definitely preferred him as the reluctant vampire.

I liked Barnabas as the reluctant vampire because it brought pathos to the character, and that's when he and Julia were working together, which was my favorite part of the show. I did enjoy his early episodes, that's what drew me in, but I liked the post-1795 episodes better.

I'm in the minority here and loved him as a blood thirsty vampire. You have the power baby ... USE IT !!

emeraldeyesonly picked Both:
I like both characterizations. I think we needed to see what Barnabas had become, and the explanation for it, before we could really feel sympathy for him or believe the reluctant angle.

Ah, I like him both ways, but all angsty is fine by me. He was at his best when being "reluctant", so full of shame, regret, remorse... You just couldn't resist those sad, puppy-dog eyes and pitiful looks he gave. He needed a big old hug from all of us who worshiped him!

I agree, and he was genuine there too, unlike in 1967. As he told Roxanne in 1970 PT, he had longed to hold someone, and so he liked the hugs. He got very warm and affectionate and caring later on..:)
