I'm not sure about this, both are in the same level, but since Esme has been living in the streets for her entire life, I guess she has an advantage.

Anna made a good point. Esme has HAD to learn to rely on herself and what she has for survival. Maybe not a good comparison because Belle for a peasant is very well-off.
