tvman I can explain that knifewrench. Hulu is a site in which the major US networks are putting the same content you can get on their on demand sites onto one big site. The problem is that they are only (for now as they are trying to make it available to everyone in the world, but can't due to legal restrictions in all countries) for now legally allowed to broadcast within the United States (they are all countryist, I know). I find this extremely insulting, as to have their own logo in the green font on there, they must have gotten permission somehow by a member of the fanpop Four (via payoff, or request). I find it insulting because 2 weeks ago I e-mailed dave asking him to find someway to make Hulu videos banned from working on fanpop. dave said he didn't want to do it because fanpop is filled with mostly Americans (he really made this sound like Americans were supirior to the world, and I know that if the fanpop four were not located in America they would feel as mad as us in the international community do). There is nothing you can really do to stop it, but I do have a link to a site here that can bypass the countryist law, and allow people like you an me in the international community (I'm from Canada), outside of the United States to watch these videos. I will e-mail it to you so you can see if it works. I will write the e-mail right now, and then you can decide if you want to link it to your viewers.

Cinders I wouldn't call the laws "countryest." If this is copyrighted material owned by American companies then they have the right to dictate what is done with it. Some of these things haven't aired in other countries yes, which means that if an American company was legally broadcasting online overseas, it would take viewers away from the international channels that later air the American-owned shows... Rereading that, I'm not sure it makes sense, but it does in my head. The point is, it's international business pure and simple. There is no preference for one country simply because it's "better" or "worse." We get BBC shows after the UK airs it there first. And I think Dave meant that there are a lot of people who CAN see the hulu videos who would be upset that they can't view it on fanpop anymore. Believe me I'm the first to call out the USA when it's being pompous, but I don't think it is in this instance. That said, I do hate hulu. The videos don't fit in the allotted space and their posting method is whack.

dave Hi guys, Thanks for voicing your concern. We know how much the site means to all of you and to us. One of our biggest goals is to add high-quality content to Fanpop so that the fans can enjoy things they care about. Users are constantly adding great stuff, but we knew that there were other sources out there as well that could feed everyone's hunger for good content. We're trying our best to respect copyright owners and so we decided to add Hulu videos to the mix because they are legal content which won't get taken down. They have high-quality videos and agreements with the networks to stream this content. I think it's sad that anyone would think that we are being US-centric or that we don't value our international users, because clearly we do. One of the best things about Fanpop is how global the community of fans is. The studios are based in the US and they have agreements with networks abroad that do not allow them to stream outside of the US. These are all legal matters that are beyond our control. That being said, we don't want to deprive users who are able to watch these videos just because not everyone can view them. Our hope is that they will figure out a way to open them up to other countries, but until then, we want to provide as much content as possible. Voting them down because you can't watch them isn't really fair to the content or to other users. We're doing our best guys and trying to provide as many fans as we can the best experience possible. Sometimes things are out of our control. You know we would make it viewable to everyone if we could, but it's out of our hands. I hope you guys understand where we're coming from.

greedo For those of you outside of the U.S., there are ways to watch hulu videos from abroad. Just google it. There are a bunch of methods. And fwiw, the hulu video quality is great. So if you can get them, it's well worth it.

dave And to clarify, they're not paying us anything to do this, we did it because we thought a lot of fans would really appreciate and enjoy the content they offer.

germany123 We're actually working with Hulu to provide quality videos for Fanpop thats a quote from dave ;) the re-post issue is annoying i understand that..but i dont think the company cares how you rate them. i cant imagine any hulu CEO going: i want one of those medals! or: yay we got a prop for our vids!ok that sounds wrong..i just mean you wont hurt the "person" posting it.

germany123 oh...loads of messages just popped up- i wrote my comment without reading what dave had said.. i am really annoyed that i cant watch hulu- i tried to get around it but since they stream the episodes on their site it doesnt work for me because my connection is ´not good enough. its interesting though- tv is changing so much and the networks cant stop it anyway. this whole distribution thing is getting redundant ..everyone is watching everything already so why not just make it legal and accessible!?

papa What germany123, you aren't going to give Hulu user a prop? :-) Per Cinder's comment above and germany123's, I think Hulu would LOVE to make the content available to everyone globally. But honestly, it's not that simple. The studios and their distribution partners have a large number of other syndication agreements that need to be honored. NBC can't go ahead and start streaming its TV shows on the web to British users if it has a deal in place with Channel 4 and the program hasn't even aired in the UK yet. Hopefully these things will change. Also - I will be going through the spots and disabling those badly miscategorized video clips as well as looking into knifewrench's specific issue of duplicates (that he already added).

harold You can't do anything about repeat posts, knifewrench. Yes, it's very annoying, but at best it's an etiquette issue for users to search and try to not repeat posts. Believe me, I know whereof I speak, as I've been aggravated by repeat posts for a long time in many spots (most notably [url=http://www.fanpop.com/spots/music-videos]Music Videos[/url], though). I wish it were otherwise, but in the end it remains up to the users to decide which version of a particular video (or image, for that matter) they're going to prefer. The site used to have a "duplicate content" spot, but it was removed. I suspect it may have had something to do with some very public arguments between users who were posting and immediately flagging each other. Duplicate flags in such situations would be pretty hard to moderate, I think. In any case, for whatever reason, that report flag is no more, so we're left to adjudicate. What I do often is just post a comment like: "I really liked this, and I also enjoyed it when it was posted *here*" (with *here* as a link to the original posted content). Medals notwithstanding, it's important I think to not get too possessive of content we post to the site, but rather to be glad when there is activity in a spot whose topic we adore.

knifewrench Thanks Papa :) Harold, my problem isn't exactly having duplicates, it's having duplicates added by web crawlers (because the content is usually badly-keworded and unreleated, and are often duplicates. On top of that we have no way of communicating with web crawlers, so we have to bug the Fanpop Four every time we have an issue with a web crawler.)

amazondebs well that was a interesting read, learnt lots from everyone and about marking the videos down if they bad keywords anyway, then technically it's just us rating fairly? as far as spamming goes though, i have uploaded the same content twice in the past e.g. someone from the buffy spot sent me a mail complaining about the fact that couldn't use the videos i uploaded because they were tudou although i think she rated a lot of them ones, point taken so i uploaded the same ones using youku, that's not spamming is it? same video, different link? so it sucks with the keywording but if your using a different streaming site i don't think it's spamming

Saul_Mikoliunas Ok so having read the above I know you are not getting paid so now I have no answer at all for my...question. When you go to the home page of say the How I Met Your Mother spot the videos that have been added by hulu come up as the three videos however there have been other videos added after with images (if you know what I mean) from youtube and they don't show up on the home page? Is this just me missing something or is there a reason? I apologise if that message came off rude, it is entirely unintentional. I also apologise if it makes no sense, I seem to have lost the ability to speak english today.

_lina_ I'm just wondering why the hulu videos don't appear in my updates section. I mean, they are new content, so they should appear, right? Or are others seeing them? Also, I agree with the keywords thing. For example, in the Office spot, the only keywords hulu gives is "hulu" and "nbc" which, in my opinion, aren't keywords at all.

knifewrench Just a little bit of info: I searched "Hulu" in the search box yesterday, and it came up with over 100 pages of videos! What relevance that had to anything anyone said, I don't know.

germany123 @debs: i think with episodes it fair game to put duplicates because some just dont work on some computers.. same video, different link? if its the same link you get a warning- ive never tried to post it anyway- is that even possible? @sualey ive added some vids now its changed @ lina im actually grateful they are not in the updates becasue i cant view them..that would be very frustrating. but i think they need i dunno a green box around them or something because on the spot page you cant distinguish them from other content and its really annyoing to click on them only to find out they are not viewable

amazondebs what i meant by different link is you sometimes get people uploading the same clips from the same sites although i think that only really happens with youtube yeah i too am happy they are not in the updates sounds like they add a lot and might fill it up green box is a good idea as a way to seperate them but can't you view their adder?

tubby2002 I just now noticed about the Hulu thing. The thing that I dont like about it is that it says it was posted like 4 months ago when it fact it was posted yesterday. The problem with that is that it is actaully in the slot for 4 months ago; therefore, the new ones that are added arent at the top of the list. I don't like this because if I already go through a page of videos and watch and rate them i am not going to keep going through them. I look forward to newly added items to be put on page one... I dont know if that makes sense, but i didnt really know how to explain it!
