How to make a twist in a character's personality super unexpected?

I'm escritura a story right now and I want one of the characters to have a totally different personality to what he always appears to be. He appears to be ethical, calm and kind but in reality he is scheming and straight up evil. How do I write it so it will be very unexpected that he will be a bad guy?

Thank tu in advance.

Well if you're going for a completely out of the blue plot twist, I would focus on fleshing out his good guy persona. If he's responsible for some of the conflicts that have been happening in the story, try and have some other suspects, I would say at least two, one of which seems the obvious villain and another that seems slightly less obvious, but still has no alibi so the reader thinks he/she will be the plot twist villain, if there is one. And if tu can, make it seem like the real bad guy actually has an alibi, when upon a más thorough investigation it falls flat.

If tu want to add even más surprise, I'd have the character do something the protagonists believe at the time to be "saving" them, and possibly undoing some of his own work to gain trust and decrease suspension, both from the other characters and from the readers. It's a calculated mover that might delay his plans in the short-term but be extremely beneficial to him in the long run.

Additionally, I would try not to make him act like a "Gary Stu" good guy, o a seemingly perfect character with no flaws, as this will seem almost too good to be true and might cause some readers to see it coming. I'd give him some flaws, like maybe he has some anger issues coming through, o control issues, possibly anxiety.. something that makes him más relatable and sympathetic to the audience. If the reader can see that he is imperfect and human, the persona will seem less like a facade and más like his real self.

Good luck on the story! :)

I personally find the best way to hide a villain is in plain sight. Like Palpatine. tu know, have him take on two personalities for a while. As far as readers are concerned, it's a good guy against a bad guy. In reality, though, it's a bad guy undercover against his real self.
