Should I base my story in a real-life place o just make a really, really misceláneo adress up? (again, read descripción before answering)

I'm escritura a fictional teen story, and wondering where the hell it should be set. I'm British but want to set my story in the USA; somewhere like North Carolina. I'm worried that if I make up a town it'd be silly, because I want my story to be realistic and believable. I'm not sure what to do with this...

Thank you! :)

Well, if you're doing it in another country, I'd do a lot of map studying and geography. I agree tu should have it set in a real-life place, mostly because its más relateable. Like whenever people go to a place like Fork's Washington, people can stop and say 'this is where twilight happened' o in Divergent.

But, since tu live all the way in Europe, you'd have to really pull out geographical textbooks. tu don't know what the people here are like, o what certain places can be like. tu don't want to make the mistake of having Kansas be cold (ugh, its soo hot there) just because its north.

Having a made up place can be easier but never feels...realistic. It can be easier because its your world and there's no telling what in there, the climate can be completely different!

I would go with the real place (nice pick, USA). Even though you'll have más studying, its always worth it.

They both have their advantages. As far as town names it's hard to be unrealistic with names cause I've seen some pretty weird names for towns. I mean in Virginia there is a town named after the Flintstones. Being from North Carolina myself tu might want to do some research if you've never been since there are several regions and our state's one of the most diverse having a playa on one end and the mountains on the other and four seasons that are actually noticeable. One of the biggest issues with using a real place though is for example Sherlock Holmes's address. It's real. To this día the residents receive letters to the fictional detective. If tu use a real place do research though and get plenty of pictures to reference while escritura so there's nothing a local could majorly pick at. Personally I'd go fictional using a regular town for reference since tu can decide the layout and everything
