I woke up the siguiente morning rather groggy. I rubbed my forehead and looked out the window to see that we were still in Drumheller. Now that confused me. Along with the fact that I didn't remember my own birthday yesterday. I mean, I turned eighteen. That's big. I'm an adult. Technically speaking. But it's like Sixteen Candles. Biologically, I'm eighteen. But physically, I still look sixteen. Sixteen. I don't feel different, and I don't look different. I was expecting some huge overnight change, but I wanted to at least feel older.
Okay, now I'm just whining.
Back to the outside, I was so confused. I thought Chris told us we were going to Hawaii. Guess I was wrong. Maybe the heat was getting to me. After all, I thought I heard someone canto to me while I was sleeping.
I laughed at that thought, standing up and stretching. I sat back down in my asiento siguiente to Duncan. Him and Alejandro were still asleep. Sleeping like rocks, I might add. I reached down to scratch my ankle. I think I scratched it on something while I was digging yesterday. I closed my eyes, just resting them. Then I heard Chris walk in. He must have thought I was asleep.
He was about to wake us up. I could tell.
I lazily turned over and pressed one ear against the asiento and pressed my shoulder up against my other. Then I heard the muffled sound of a bullhorn. I opened my eyes, seeing Duncan and Alejandro sitting bolt upright and Chris smirking at them.
"Morning!" he dicho cheerily. The boys merely groaned in response. "Okay. Since this is the día of the challenge that will decided who the final two are, I thought we'd start early. Because tu have one hell of a challenge today!" he shouted. I sighed and threw my head back. "There's wreckage outside. Do what tu can to build a mode of transportation to get to Tijuana beach. tu know, close to Hawaii, on the Mexican border," he said.
The three of us sat in silence for a moment, staring at each other, waiting to see who would mover first. There was a thick silence that passed. The tension pressed onto my, weighing me down. My muscles tensed. I gripped the arms of the asiento I was sitting in. I held my breath. I saw a flash in Alejandro's eyes, as if he had just gotten an idea.
Then somehow, the three of us all jumped up at the same time and raced outside. por the pile of spare parts, there were three sets of a GPS and a walkie-talkie. I grabbed mine, then looked around while slightly slowing down to a rápido, swift walk.
I felt a hand clap on my shoulder and spin me around. Expecting to see Alejandro trying to get me to work with him, I stared into Duncan's verde azulado, trullo, teal eyes. I smiled lovingly at him. He smiled back at me. He pulled me into a tight hug, which I willingly accepted.
He kissed the parte superior, arriba of my head. "I don't think we should work together on this one." He whispered. I pulled away from him, just enough to look into his eyes with a bit of hurt. "Chris wouldn't let us." He added. I looked down, completely defeated.
If I didn't have Duncan, I didn't have the one who means the world to me. Sure, he was my boyfriend. But he was also my best friend. My compadre. Amigo. Partner in crime. La partie terminante in my little life. If I didn't have him, I didn't even want to think about what I would do.
I felt my chin being lifted up por his index finger. I looked at him with soft eyes, tears threatening to breath through. He pressed his lips onto mine, for the last kiss we would have for while.
It seemed as if it were over as soon as it began. He smiled at me and kissed my forehead. "Wish me luck." He whispered before squeezing my hand and walking away. I stared after him.
"Luck." I whispered to no one. I hope that it would be carried on a small gust of wind and reach him like in a movie. But that was fantasy. The real world was much harder. Like the obvious difference between a new malvavisco and a rock.
I turned around to continue walking. I didn't have time to build something. Let alone the experience with that. The closest thing I got to building was making a shoe box sized solar car out of balsa wood and hot glue with two of my friends in science class back in sixth grade. And I don't think any of that would be useful here. So I just had to keep walking. And if something comes, it comes-
Scratch that. It came.
I was standing in front of a train station. I looked at the schedule. There was a train coming soon that was on a nonstop trip to the Mexican border. Perfect. I smiled and shoved my hand into a pocket of mine, finding a few bills.
Seriously, where did that come from? I didn't even remember packing money.
Well, it's paying off now... And that's an example of a bad pun.
I had just enough to buy a ticket. Then the train came. I got on, just as a normal passenger. I turned off my walkie-talkie and set the GPS between me and the muro I was sitting by. I saw a newspaper on the table. I picked it up, lectura whatever.
The page I was on had horoscopes. Isn't that magazines?
Well, never the less, I decided to read mine for the hell of it.
Libra:
tu might feel slightly run-down mentally and physically- A little rest and nutritious comida will go a long way in lifting your energy. Control your expenses and try not to be too lavish in your spending today. Take advantage of the free time tu have to help family members. Use your discretion power in amor today. Defer new project and expenses. A beneficial día as things seem to go in your favor and tu will be on parte superior, arriba of the world.
I smiled to myself. Well that's a good sign. Seeming to be fine, I sat back with my arms folded behind my head. I closed my eyes, and drifted into a light nap.
"I'm sorry, but my brother, he's not a wild animal." That jolted me awake. I turned my head to see Alejandro with... Ezekiel? Must have been. Green skin, bald, gray eyes, yup. Definitely Ezekiel. I picked up the newspaper and held it in front of my face. I knew it was useless. He probably already knew where I was sitting.
Scratch that, he did know, seeing as he sat across from me.
After a few minutos of silence, I gave up and placed the paper back down on the mesa, tabla while glaring at him. "What are tu doing here?" I asked him.
He smirked and chuckled. "Simple. Just taking a train ride with my brother." He dicho while petting Ezekiel on the head.
I stood up, snapping my fingers at him while beckoning him to follow me with a finger. I walked out of the cabina and to where no one would hear us. I crossed my arms and stared at Alejandro, my hair whipping in my face.
He glanced around. "What?" he asked with a shrug.
"You followed me." I hissed at him.
"I did no such thing!" he dicho while putting his hands on his hips and stomping his foot. "But I did take a truck ride with those horrid beasts. The crates were emptied onto the train, and I did not want to stay with them for the whole ride to Tijuana." He said. I gave him an unsure look. He groaned, letting his arms hang down. "Does it really look like I didn't take a ride with a bunch of wild and rabid animales plus Ezekiel?" he asked. I just looked down and shook my head.
He screamed something in Spanish - probably something incredibly offensive to me - and pulled me up to the roof just as it started hailing. I looked around, trying to keep my balance.
"Hate to be caption obvious, but it's hailing." I dicho to him. He just crossed his arms and glared at him.
"I can tell, thank you." He said.
"Why did tu bring me up here?"
"I just thought it would be a better thinking space. No need to risk a claustrophobic freak out from you." He said. He knew about my claustrophobia?
As I attempted to get better footing, but ended up slipping and falling back, saving myself from grabbing onto the edge of the roof. I started breathing heavily and kicking frantically to find somewhere to fit my foot. No use.
I looked up at Alejandro, who was now looking over the edge at me. "Help me!" I shouted at him. He just chuckled and turned away. What is with him? Yesterday he's actuación like he can't live without me, and now he couldn't care less if I fell to my death o serous injury right now. And at the velocity that we're moving, I'm leaning towards death.
Then... Song bell. Great. Just. Freaking. Great. Alejandro looked over the edge at me. I couldn't tell the emotion that was in his eyes. Then the música started.
Me: I guess tu really did it this time.
Left yourself in your war path.
lost your balance on a tightrope,
lost your mind tryin' to get it back.
Wasn't it easier in your lunchbox days?
Always a bigger cama to crawl into.
Wasn't it beautiful when tu believed in everything,
And everyone believed in you?
It's all right, just wait and see,
Your string of lights are still bright to me.
Oh, who tu are is not what you've been,
You're still an innocent.
You're still an innocent.
Alejandro looked down at me, his cold eyes softening a bit.
Did some things tu can't speak of.
But at night tu live it all again.
tu wouldn't be shattered on the floor now.
If only tu had seen what tu know now then.
Wasn't it easier in your firefly catchin' days?
With everything out of reach, someone bigger brought it down to you.
Wasn't it beautiful runnin' wild till tu fell asleep,
Before the monsters caught up to you?
It's all right, just wait and see,
Your string of lights are still bright to me.
Oh, who tu are is not what you've been,
You're still an innocent.
It's okay, life is a tough crowd.
Seventeen, and still growin' up now.
Who tu are is now what tu did,
You're still an innocent.
Time turns flames to embers,
You'll have new Septembers,
Every one of us has messed up too.
Minds change like the weather,
I hope tu remember,
Today is never too late to,
Be brand new.
I felt my hand slipping. I tried to get a better grip, but I couldn't. I thought I was going to die. But a strong hand gripped my right wrist.
Alejandro.
You're still and innocent.
He pulled me up, holding me close to him.
lost your balance on a tightrope.
It's never too late to get it back.
Alejandro still had his arms wrapped around me when the hail stopped. Then so did the train. We were there. Fast.
We jumped off, only too see Duncan was there also. How he got there was beyond me. We all jumped into different boats. I blew Duncan a kiss. He smiled and mimed catching it. I started my boat, my hair whipping back in the wind. I stood up when I saw that sandy shores of Hawaii. I smiled when I saw my friends there.
Bridgette. LeShawna. Noah. DJ. Owen. Geoff.
And the other bunch who I met on this roller coaster ride of a reality show.
I smiled so much it was unnatural. I stopped steering, jumping up and running to the bow, jumping into the shallow water and running to be embraced por my friends.
"And Gwen is the first member of the final two!" Chris shouted. I smiled, and I swear to God I was crying a bit.
Then I turned around to see Duncan and Alejandro, neck and neck, until they both ran into a mooring, causing them to land on the playa in a dead tie. I widened my eyes, putting a hand to my mouth.
Duncan looked at me with happy eyes. He jumped up and ran over to me. He picked me up and spun me around. I smiled. He set me down and kissed me.
"You know, that is too close to call." Chris said. "I'd go to the slo-mo to declare a winner. But... we're... kind of out of time. Yep, we are totally, completely, undeniably, out of time as... of... right... about... now." He said. I sighed. Well, at least I was in the final two. And among friends and boyfriend.
