The Department of Defense has announced the winners of its 2015 Visual Information Awards Program, which honors the best in military photography this year.
The images range from U.S. Air Force pararescuemen helping evacuate earthquake victims in Nepal to Marines training on an endurance course in Okinawa.
This year, more than 2,432 photos were entered in the annual competition, according to Mashable.
Staff Sgt. Kenny Holston, a photojournalist in the U.S. Air Force, was awarded Military Photographer of the Year.
Holston was followed by runner up SrA Jordan A Castelan of the U.S. Air Force and honorable mention Staff Sgt. Marianique Santos of the U.S. Air Force.
The images were selected as winners, runners up and honorable mentions across several categories including portrait personality, features, news, combat operations, sports photography, pictorial and combat training.
The department\'s program is \'designed to recognize, reward, and promote excellence among military communicators\' for their achievements in \'furthering the objectives of military photography, videography, and graphic arts as a command information and documentation media within the military,\' according to the Department of Defense\'s website.
