She looks utterly gorgeous in this — I wish they would mass-market it; maybe they will eventually — and the lipstick is a win.

I remember visiting this website once...
It was called Melissa McCarthy in Custom Dress at Ghostbusters Premiere - Go Fug Yourself: Because Fugly Is The New Pretty
Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
High Fugshion: Elie Saab at Haute Couture ...
Mostly Well Played: Melissa McCarthy in Judy B. Swartz at the Ghostbusters premiere
Judy Swartz is Melissa’s stylist, and she’s been engineering a lot of custom stuff for her recently.
It’s clearly a very fruitful partnership. She looks utterly gorgeous in this — I wish they would mass-market it; maybe they will eventually — and the lipstick is a win. I wince when I get to her feet, because those ankle straps look like they are slicing into her and I feel like all the blood is being blocked from flowing back up into her calves. I also want to repaint her nails red. But these are nits. Remember when she was nominated for an Oscar, and wore this, and I was deeply pained? It’s a DELIGHT to be at the nitpicking phase.
But click that link with care. It quotes an old ad that I think drove most of us insane, and y’all are going to get SUCH an earworm when you read it. MWA HA HA.

She looks great! Her hair and makeup are also about 1000x better than in that Oscars picture, can’t believe that ever got ok’d but glad we have moved to greener pastures.
Love this! She looks terrific, although I agree about the nails.
This dress is so pretty! Love it. I wish the shoes were a color.
That’s what I was thinking, those shoes need to be a color. Orange? Purple? Electric Blue? Hot Pink? I want something to bring a pop of color.
Oh, this is great (except the toe- and ankle mangling shoes)! I even love the lavender manipedi.
I love this! She looks beautiful in yellow- I really really want this dress.
I agree! I don’t generally wear flowers or yellow and I would still buy this dress in a heartbeat.
I always love the idea of delicate yellow dresses, and then I try them on and they look horribly twee on me. Sigh. For this one, though, I’d run the risk – love this!
This is such a fun silhouette that I wish more red-carpet women would wear. And twirl.
This dress is definitely Melissa’s best fit and silhouette, ever. She looks gorgeous
I have no one but my self to blame for opening that link. I was instantly transported to shaking my fist at the TV and ranting to my husband every time that commercial aired.
Same! Even though I was warned, I couldn’t resist and now I regret it. Ear worm central over here
I’m sure the dress would move me more if it weren’t giving me flashbacks to my aunt’s 1967 wedding: my mom made bridesmaids’ dresses and my sister’s and my flower girl dresses, and this dress is spookily (heh) reminiscent of them all! It’s a lovely dress though, but I’ll join with those who dislike the shoes. I still want her to part her hair on the side but maybe she knows she’d be off the charts hot if she did that …
I agree about that hint of throwback; there’s something almost modest about the dress despite it all. I’d like to freshen it up a little with a V neckline and maybe take the hem a few inches in a different direction, plus reflect the hemline treatment on the sleeves – they end so abruptly. Side part to the hair and a casual updo, better shoes and BAM, there we go.
From the HR article: “In between L.A. and New York, that’s really where the market is and not everybody is a size 2 or a size 4,”
Uh, not everyone in L.A. and New York is a size 2 or size 4, either. And there are plenty of size 2 and size 4 women between L.A. and New York. UGH. Why can’t we just say that high fashion dislikes anyone, anywhere larger than a size 4?
I feel I must say that her clothing line in Nordstrom is terrible!. It’s almost like she dresses one way and “sells” another way of dressing. She should take a page out of Reese Witherspoon’s book. Reese is an ambassador for her own brand which Melissa is not.
I was quite disappointed in her Lane Bryant line as well — cheap fabrics, with everything baggy and over-embellished and WAY overpriced for the quality. Which is indeed pretty much what you get with LB, but I had higher hopes for her line.
I’ve not been impressed when I saw her stuff on HSN, either.
Great dress and it looks great on her. But the tightness of shoe straps is distracting.
She looks great. The movie, however, is being creamed by the critics. This project has been doomed from the start.
All the reviews I’ve read have been pretty good? It’s 78% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
I literally just read an article right before I came to GFY that listed several snippets of critics reviews and they were almost all complimentary.
I will admit I’ve only read the Guardian one, but they flat out LOVED it.
I never trust cranky critics when they review fun action movies. You don’t go to a summer blockbuster popcorn movie to learn something or be spiritually enlightened somehow. You go for fun and A/C and snacks.
I just now realized why I haven’t been to a summer blockbuster movie in a decade: I moved to Seattle, and don’t need air conditioning!
Plus I guess I’m not that into movies; I like television series better for the longer, more complicated plots, but the real reason to go was the A/C and snacks.
Her body confidence is off the chart and it seems like she’s so much more willing to work her curves. I love it!
I agree on the shoes- not great. But the color and style of the dress is so fun, and her hair and makeup are lovely. I could see Helen Mirren in this dress, twirling on the red carpet. Fun choice for a summer movie premiere.
She looks fabulous!! But my one nitpick is that the sleeves should have been finished in the same way as the hem. Cutting ‘illusion netting” does not a hem make.
It would be perfect if the sleeves and neckline had the yellow trim.
THOSE SHOES/THAT SHOE STYLE just needs to die die die as a trend.
She is gorgeous and the dress is gorgeous. She deserves a better shoe–how about these?
Those are very cute! Or I was thinking that she could have done a little peep toe, with no ankle straps. That would have gone with the vintage silhouette of the dress.
Thank you!!! I used to regularly read the Red Carpet Fashion Awards blog (RIP) and whenever someone wrote that an outfit needed a ‘strappy sandal’ I felt the fashion equivalent of road rage.* No, not every outfit needs a strappy sandal, they’re not the answer to all and everything and oh so many times they do nothing than mangle their wearers’ feet!
(*My all time favorite was the Duchess of Cambridge attending some event where she had to plant a tree yet people demanded she should have worn a strappy sandal while shoveling.)
Am I the only one who thinks Melissa’s hair would look better with this particular dress if it was in a sleek up-do? I think it’s fighting with the pattern on the shoulders.
No! I would have liked to seen an up-do or even a ponytail with this myself.
She looks terrific from the shins up (though I echo the sentiment that the sleeves should have been finished/ edged with that yellow piping). The feet, though. Lawd, the feet. It’s actually extremely distracting for me, and kind of a big demerit. Ankle-strapped shoes are a high-ish degree of difficulty, in my opinion. You’ve got to have very dainty/shapely ankles, which actually many people (of all sizes) do not have. Most of us just have functional and/or sturdy peasant ankles to varying degrees (I include myself in this category). Combine this with most types of straight-across ankle straps, and you get a very unflattering, canklely, stumpifying effect. The holy grail is an ankle-strapped high heel that does not do this…I think the key is one that goes more underneath the ankle, closer to the top of the foot, like in 1940s shoes. Or ankle straps that crisscross.
I want this dress. I covet this dress.
I may be the only dissenting opinion here…the silhouette and the yellow overlay is very pretty, but that nude under-layer is awful. Not awful, that’s a teeny hyperbolic I guess—but I feel like this dress could have a lot more JOY to it if it’d been in a color other than “oatmeal flesh” (and I say that as an oatmeal-fleshed person myself) paired with the yellow. Her hair and make up are just beautiful—but meh overall on the rest.
Yup, me too. I’m not keen on the yellow, but I really really hate the sludgy dishwater colour of the under layer.
Yeah, me three. Love the silhouette, but the nude layer is a terrible, terrible noncolor. Soggy dead cuticle. Spoiled almond milk. Cakey tube of concealer found in the back of a vintage bedside table.
I’d really like to see the yellow flowers zing against a navy background, or peony pink.
Completely agree. I hate that the lining is showing under the sleeves and under the neckline. I have no idea why anybody thought that this would not distract from the pretty dress.
ha! Oatmeal flesh! I feel you sister. And in the summer, our oatmeal flesh is speckled with red rashes, bug bites, and sunburn.
I think a navy or gray underlayer would have been stunning! She looks great, but the beigey blah lining is trying to rain on her parade.
I love, love, love the dress. The shape is great, the fit is perfection, and the pattern and yellow are so happy and pretty!
However, she NEVER gets a pass on crappy shoes from me. Brian Atwood is one of her best friends, so there is NO EXCUSE for bad shoes. Girl, call him up. He could have given you something divine!
