In the wake of Alex (Justin Chambers) beating DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) within an inch of his life, Jo (Camilla Luddington) and Alex are on the outs. “Right now, it seems as though Alex and her are dunzo,” Luddington tells EW Editor-in-Chief Henry Goldblatt on his SiriusXM radio show

But that means Alex is unaware the woman he asked to marry isn’t who she says. After finding out about Jo’s past — she ran away from an abusive husband and changed her name — Luddington turned to executive producer Shonda Rhimes to get insight on why Jo wouldn’t share this information with Alex.

“Something that was so interesting to me that they said was that this person is so dangerous that she has believed that he would not only come after her if he found out her identity, but he would also come after Alex,” Luddington says. “She thought in keeping it secret from Alex — because perhaps she thought he would have a knee-jerk reaction to the news and do something that would put them both in danger. The issue is seeing how he reacted in a knee-jerk way toward Andrew. I don’t think it helps for the future for her to tell him anytime soon, because she is worried that he would do something irresponsible that would put them both in danger.”
