The term "demigod", meaning "half god", is used to describe mythological figures whose one parent was a god and whose other parent was human. A few examples of demigods include the Celtic hero Cuchulain, Sumerian king Gilgamesh (Who supposedly was actually two thirds god), Ancient-Germanic "woodsman" Ansel, and Greek hero Hercules.

Hephaestus was not the most handsome of the gods. His mother Hera, queen of the Gods, had hurled him from Mount Olympus when she saw how ugly he was. Pasiphae was queen of Crete, married to Minos, but enamored of the snow-white toro Poseidon had dado her husband. Unable to restrain herself, Pasiphae prevailed upon the renowned craftsman Daedalus to construct a device por which she could fool the toro into thinking her a cow.
