Yes, but not because it is a woman's choice (in many cases, it simply isn't). The legalisation of prostitution is about giving sex workers legal rights that can protect them from abuse. It is about ensuring that women have good working conditions, are paid fairly for their work and are protected from abusive employers and clients, as well as protected from sexually transmitted infections and other diseases. So it is also about providing legitimate access to healthcare and insurance.

misanthrope86, I agree. I'd like to augment as well that it would bring down unreported rapes as well as rape in general. I have also read that it brings down the amount of "date rape" as well. Considering the fact that women are already heavily involved in it makes me think that legalizing it would only protect them more all around?

You do realize women are only prostitutes because they feel doomed with no other choice or are forced into it right? They're highly at risk of being murdered are abused and the vast majority of them have tragic backstories. Not to mention it is totally objectifying!

uploaded900, your argument makes me believe more so that legalizing it is the right thing to do. If the women are forced into it and at high risks of being victims of illegal activity, then legalizing it will lessen those things as misanthrope86 pointed out. So in the end, legalizing prostitution protects the women in it, forced or not, more than not legalizing it does. Shouldn't we support the choice that protects the women the most?

@ uploaded900 Absolutely women entering the sex industry is heavily influenced by socio-economic status, discrimination, abuse and so on. This is highly gendered. And would agree with what I suspect your point is which is that there needs to be better systems and social and economic supports for women so that prostitution is not something the have to do in order to survive.
BUT the decriminalisation of prostitution would help ensure that these women do not become legal victims to their circumstances (ie forced into sex work and then arrested for it). They would also enjoy more legal rights and access to the things I described in my earlier comment which would work towards making their jobs safer (link).
So yep, there needs to be support for women so that prostitution is not the only option for a woman. But the women who do find themselves working in the sex industry deserve to be treated with dignity.
And for the record there are sex workers who have lead relatively privileged lives who actively choose to be prostitutes. I have seen a documentary about such women, but can't find it. I'll let you know if I do find it.

Does anyone have any source material on how women are forced into the sex industry so I can read up? I have heard this but never seen any data to support it. I have also seen some documentaries that included women in the sex industry who were not forced into it and challenged that "stereotype". Not sure which is more accurate or what the case is and would love to see more research on it.
