I have always enjoyed Disney on Ice. I find the familiar Disney songs, bright glittery costumes, and graceful ice skaters an absolute irresistible combination! Plus, it’s a great way to get a dose of Disney magic at an affordable price. So when I heard that Disney’s newest ice show, Frozen on Ice, was headed to the Prudential Center Newark, NJ, I couldn’t wait to get my ticket and experience the show. In one word the show was amazing! Frozen on Ice certainly lived up to its extremely popular movie namesake. In fact, there were so many enjoyable facets of the performance I thought it would be easiest to highlight a few. For starters, if you are a little late, don’t worry about it! The show doesn’t begin immediately. The first 10 minutes consist of a crowd warm up and lots of product placement for the Frozen on Ice sponsor, Yogurt. At the conclusion of the warm up the main event starts and there’s much to enjoy! Before diving right into the story of Frozen, there’s a great opening that features a few surprise guests. (You’re little princess will not want to miss this!) During the official opening, some of your favorite Disney friends talk about the different types of love which segues nicely into the story of Frozen.

Despite the limited number of set pieces and props available, the show’s designers did a wonderful job creating Arendelle on ice. In fact, many iconic set pieces from the movie can be found in the show. Arendelle’s town square fountain freezes and thaws before your eyes, Kristoff’s sled is packed full of slow selling ice, and Elsa’s infamous ice steps make an appearance. In addition to props and set pieces, the use of theatrical lights and pyrotechnics are highly effective to create the perfect mood and environment. I don’t want to give too much away, but different light filters and colors are used throughout the show to simulate sun, snow, and other ice wonders.

However, despite the skillful combination of lights, props, and sceneic elements there are a few sections of the ice show where you have to use your imagination. The most notable scenes are the attack of the wolves and Marshmallow’s rage. Normally, this is easy to do and not a problem but these musical sections feel drawn out and slightly tedious as the ice skaters flail about the ice escaping various characters. All of your favorite friends from Frozen make an appearance including the aforementioned snow monster Marshmallow, the Duke of Weasel…I mean Weselton, and baby Sven. Frozen on Ice encompasses the entire storyline and soundtrack of Frozen the movie. Unlike other Disney on Ice shows where stories are hacked apart to fit into a time limit, Frozen on Ice is consistent with the story the world has fallen in love with. In fact, a few of the songs are extended. My favorite was Kristoff’s “Reindeer Are Better Than People” show stopper.

Frozen on Ice was a fun and highly entertaining event, one I wouldn’t hesitate to see again! If you have a Frozen fan in your life, or if you are a Frozen fan, do yourself a favor and purchase a ticket. It’s a perfect holiday treat and will not disappoint.
