First off, the final line in TLM is, "I love you, daddy!" That should be a clue about how important the father-daughter relationship is in the story.
The plot of TLM is intricately woven around the tempestuous love-hate relationship between Ariel and Triton. The villain's plot is entirely built upon exploiting their relationship for her gain. And of course, Ariel and Triton's relationship grows as a result of the story.
More than any other Disney princess movie, TLM is truly a story about a daughter growing up and a father learning to let her grow and let her go.
In contrast, both Belle and Mulan ended up still living with their fathers, and their relationships didn't really evolve.
In Tiana's case, Tiana had already grown up and was already independent by the start of the main story.
