erm what does the resolved at the beginning mean? (i know what resolved mean, i mean in this context)
because i was going to add one but i want to make sure it's clear what i mean and since i don't know what that means... lol
anyways i was going to add
'this house believes that eating meat is wrong'
or a question that i asked before that people seemed a bit undecided on was
'this house believes one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter'
or one that it might be a bit of a British thing but there was a actual debate ongoing about this a couple of years ago
'this house believes that the British government should formally apologize for their involvement in the slave trade'
you can turn that one in to any government that was part of it
or one that i actually did a few months back wich turned in to a really good debate was
'this house believes society would be better off if social networking sites had never been invented'
anyways just throwing some ideas around, personally i like the social networking one and the veggie one
althought i would love to see the god one against someone who is not religious and someone who is
The funny thing is, the "God exists" one is not really a policy, but a statement. Still, I had phrased the other two... So if it's not a legal matter, (like the God thing), you will just want to make it an affirmation.
So what you'll want to do is say "Resolved: that eating meat is immoral."
Or "Resolved: That the British government should formally apologize for the slave trade." (This IS more a policy than a statement).
Or "Resolved: That social networking sites should be outlawed to improve society." (Also a policy)
The reason I've decided to do a policy debate is because with policy, just as with law, you must understand the meaning of every word. With the social networking option for instance, the negative could argue that "What does 'improve' society mean? Are we going to outlaw certain foods because it might 'improve' the way society looks? Society does not need to be perfected."
(Please note that I phrased the social networkings question that way specifically to point out how important wording is. But I hid a similar interesting nugget in the marijuana decriminalization one and I want to see if it's picked up on).
About the terrorism one: I can't think of a way to phrase it. Even as a question, or as a "this house" because it feels very colloquial and generalized. Too many conflicting definitions. What is a terrorist is a big big topic all on its own, for example. What is a freedom fighter? What separates the two? An interesting one would be:
Resolved: That the occupying United States is as much a terrorist as the ones they have come to fight in Iraq.
Or
Resolved: That the Israeli army uses as much terrorism as the Hamas fighters.
So you can add one and if you want to add more let me know and I will.
see the way we do it in debate and by we i mean that in general it is what is used at British nations and regionals, also at my college and school is one team proposes this house believes so and so and another team opposes that statement which is why i phrased them how i did it, it's what I'm used to, we always use a completley different format to the great debate as well but i think i actually prefer the format you use, might suggest it for a debate one week at college just see how we do
i understand what you mean about the terrorist one, it just seemed to get a lot of response on the pick i made about it thought it might gather more interest like the abortion and gay marriage forums did
*wonders what golden nugget is hidden in marijuana*
That God exists. That's impossible. That day will never come. Just being truthful. I know t wont. I believe in God, I've been a Christian my whole life and will continue on that forever on, but I know that'll never occur. The world keeps getting worse and people think they're too good for God or don't need him or are too smart or have enough technology. It's sad really.
*And then sighs as she realizes what a drama/literature nerd she is...*
Google Tristan Tzara and you'll know what I mean if you're so interested.
If you feel so strongly about the topic, Dada, by all means volunteer to debate it. :o) The "resolved" part doesn't mean it's true.
