Here I will post Comparison Screencaptures from 5 different versions of Aladdin.
The 1993 Walt Disney Classics VHS The 1994 Walt Disney Classics Laserdisc The 2004 Platinum Edition DVD The 2015 Diamond Edition Blu-Ray The 2019 Walt Disney Signature Collection Ultra HD 4K FIRST IMAGE: The Walt Disney Classics VHS. Released: October 1, 1993. Aspect Ratio: 4:3 Image Quality: A really great transfer of a danish VHS. The Image is clear and the colors are great. As great as you can get from a old VHS. But it doesn't look faded in any way. I had an old American VHS transfered to Blu-ray, but that image was way to dark. Not like this version. SECOND IMAGE: The Walt Disney Classics Laserdisc. Released: September 21, 1994. Aspect Ratio: 1.66:1 Image Quality: Another great transfer. I had this one converted from Laserdisc and along with it, converted from NTSC format to pal. That unfortunately resulted in some frames missing as you will see in some of the comparison frames. But again, strong colors, fine line-art. A bit 'digitalized' (in lack of better word). THIRD IMAGE: The Walt Disney Platinum Edition DVD. Released: October 5, 2004. Aspect Ratio: 1.69:1 Image Quality: A fine update from the Laserdisc version, the Platinum Edition DVD of Aladdin offers a decent quality transfer for the most part, marred only by occasional mosquito noise and a slight softness from time to time. Also, this is where some of the blackness in both Aladdin and Jasmine's hair has turned into a sort of green. FORTH IMAGE: The Walt Disney Diamond Edition Blu-Ray. Released: October 13, 2015. Aspect Ratio: 1.85:1 Image Quality: In April of 2013, Disney did release Aladdin in Europe, in a non-Diamond Edition. I went out and got that version and was really pleased with the image quality at first. But then, when I started to take screencaps to use in this club (In the Photos Section), I started to notice there was something wrong with the transfer. I don't know if it's aliasing or edge enhancement, but there are some sort of weird halos around the lines. I was hoping when the US got the Diamond Edition, that Disney would use a new transfer. But it was the same, sadly. But other than those halos, it's a great image. Colors are deep and looks good! FIFTH IMAGE: The Walt Disney Signature Collection Ultra HD 4K. Released: September 10, 2019. Aspect Ratio: 1.66:1 Image Quality: This is without a doubt the best Aladdin has ever looked. Even though the image is quite dark, it still looks fantastic! The lines are strong and there is no strange halos around the lines this time. I'm so happy that Disney got this version right this time!
