The Marvel Universe is filled with all sorts of villains, and
features some of the most outlandish enemies of them all. Later this year, moviegoers will be introduced to new baddies from the Nine Realms when
hits theaters. The much-anticipated movie will follow the Norse god as he investigates the powerful Infinity Stones and runs into plenty of trouble along the way. And, in a slew of recently released behind-the-scenes photos, fans were teased with one famous villain’s debut.
hit the Internet which give fans a taste of the film. In two of the pictures, fans can see Thor on a dark set where he is looking upwards with a concerned expression. On his back, the hero is seen chained to a set of terrifyingly sharp horns, and comic book fans were quick to notice how similar they were to Surtur.
If you are not familiar with Surtur, then you should know the Marvel villain is not one you’d want to anger. The character comes straight from Marvel Comics and is based off the fire giant Surtr from Norse mythology. Surtur is the fire demon of Muspelheim, one of the Nine Realms which is bathed in fire. Armed with one powerful sword, Surtur is one of Thor’s most well-known villains thanks to his destructive nature.
Of course, fans learned that Surtur would be included in
last year at San Diego Comic Con. ComicBook.com was present for Marvel Studios’ panel at the event, and we were able to witness the character’s entrance. Our own Lucas Siegel had this to write about Surtur’s on-screen debut:
“The shot is early; they\'ve literally been shooting this film for five days, and this is probably test footage. Hulk is roaring, jumping from some crazy height, ready to fight. As he dives to what\'s below him, everything around him is on fire - and that\'s when you realize, there\'s a face, and out of that face a louder scream than the Hulk\'s. It\'s Surtur, the fire demon of Muspelheim.”
