2014’s American Music Awards opened with, who else, the girl of the moment, Taylor Swift. Descending from the ceiling as part of an elaborate tableau, Swift began the live performance of her latest hit, “Blank Space” clad in an elegant, long gold skirt. But after dispatching of her first on-stage beau, Swift really dove into the crazy. Whipping off the skirt to reveal a super-short fringed number (a Swift style staple) and leaning into the unhinged aspects of the song with pyrotechnics, wire work, and the craziest faces she can muster, Swift continued to cleverly comment on her exaggerated man-eater reputation.

All in all the performance, which you can watch in full here, gives us more of what we love from Swift’s 1989 album. Namely, the kind of self-aware, self-deprecating material that both skewers the haters and makes devoted fans of the rest of us. One thing you have to say about Taylor Swift, she delivers on her promises.
