I think Spidey just works better in his own universe, either as a lone hero or helped by his closest friends. I don't think he fits well into the Avengers.

That, and this is something I've never understood about Marvel. Why is it that Spiderman and the X-Men are feared and hated by society, yet the Avengers and the Fantastic Four are loved? It's a very contradicting universe.
