franchise going first filtered out at Mipcom. Today comes official word that the company will spin off its 2013 feature film hit
into a TV series with writer/exec producer Ed Decter, whose TV credits include CBS’ recently re-cancelled
“Ed Decter brings a tremendous track record to the table,” said Robert Kulzer, co-president of Constantin Film in LA and one of the original film’s producers. “As a showrunner we wanted someone who shares our passion and love for these characters and stories, and Ed has a remarkable ability to form narratives.”
Based on Cassandra Clare’s bestselling YA book series, the series will reboot the chronicle of the Shadowhunters led by Clary Fray and Jace Wayland in one-hour episodes beginning with the first book,

Unique Features’ Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne will executive produce the series, as the did on the film.

So do they have a deal at a network or are they just making it and hoping?
The film wasn’t a hit, which is why they’re doing a tv series and not movie sequels.
I’m disappointed that the books won’t be made into movies. I
I thought the movie was “good” 6.9/10 overall (7.95 by me because I love this genre, and the story is different/refreshing in some ways). I never even heard of the books until… I stumbled upon my On Demand at 12:30AM one night reading each and every description, looking for a fantasy flick, and there it was. It was NOT overwhelmingly powerful to where I said to friends “you have to watch this” but I, myself, enjoyed it thoroughly through the night… It’s sad the money games they have to play. It’s not even production money, really… It’s those getting older, and old and are in the “business” who “landed them their deal” who want bucks straight to their account on the morrow not giving 2 flying cents how the movie turns out. It’s not investing, it’s usury… Hollywood is an absolute cesspit of slithering snakes and swine. Reading the books currently, love them. Doesn’t top ASOIAF (Game of Thrones) but it’s a favorite alongside Hunger Games, Divergent and Maze Runner… (Harry Potter will not be brought into this discussion because she is my first love and I do not compare or contrast that period of my life, reading those books, with any series nor will I ever…)
I LOVED the books. The movie was depressing because it failed to be ANYTHING like the books. The whole series was built upon a fragile, small, red headed girl (clary). And a SERIOUSLY RIPPED boy, a foot taller than the girl. He has GOLDEN hair, and GOLDEN eyes. The whole idea of a TV series is ok. But they HAVE TO make it accurate, or all the readers will be angery and hate the series.
Finaly someone else feels my pain with the actress for Clary. “Fragile, small, red-headed girl” is what the story NEEDS.
Omg! Yes! I hated the movie it was so so so SO different from the books. They turned the books into trash.
I feel your pain. I don’t recognize several characters who were cast in the movie. Otherwise, if you have not read the books, it was fairly entertaining.
I totally agree, it also made me quite frustrated when in the movie they actually state that Valentine is pretending that they are brother and sister…. :/
You do realize that in the first few books in the series that Valentine makes them think they are brother and sister, that’s what makes the books really good. I personally didn’t really like the movie…
YES the movie totally get the characters right! Izzy was supposed to talk more and be nice and fierce! Jace was supposed to talk more, outwit, and etc. He was too mysterious, which in the book he was also but that’s only thing he was basically.
Omg congratulations Ed!! I just have one really urgent request: Please keep the ORIGINAL cast members? Like Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Kevin Zegers, Godfrey Gao etc. Please?
yes, keep the cast, they soo fit for the job! <3
Oh God. Please change the cast. Jaime was NOT Jace at all. Did you guys even read the books?
But he did a great job acting out Jace’s witty and sarcastic personality -.-
I like Jamie, but he couldn’t portray Jace at all! He did a great job showing how protected he was, but Jace is sarcastic and funny at times, not all seriousness. He also looked fragile… Not a sexy greek-god-like that I imagined Jace to be
Yes please keep most of the cast. Especially Godfrey and Kevin.
Yeaaaaah. omg I love the cast soooo much!! They HAVE to keep them
Yeah please keep the casts! love them all especially Jamie Campbell Bower and Lily Collins! PLEASE!!!
Please keep the original cast. Even if Jamie was not exactly like Jace physically, his acting skills were perfect. He was funny, intense and sexy. I only hope the original cast is willing to do a TV show and for the love of all that is great, Stick to the story line in the books. There is enough there to get several seasons out of it.
Yes keep the Cast!!!! Do that and start from the beginning and be more accurate to the books. Then you will have as many if not more followers than The Walking Dead. Just don’t have the same time slot.
OMG! I can’t wait for the series! I thought the movie City of Bones was great and in-line with the book. People who say the movie is boring is because they do not understand what shadowhunters and downworlders are about and probably didn’t read the books. It’s just like some of the other books out there and in fact, similar to Sherrilyn Kenyon Dark Hunters series.
The movie was supposed to perfectly translate the books into the movies leaving people with no knowledge of the book in perfect understanding. The truth of the matter is that the movie was horrid and didn’t AT ALL add up to the book. Maybe you should consider re-reading them?
I am extremely ecstatic about this. The movie completely destroyed the life and adventure of the novels. I hated Clary and Jace’s faces too much to even consider it being okay. They were awful choices. I agree that Sheehan should stay ( which is quite a big possibility considering he’s generally a TV actor ), but I loved Jemima West as Isabelle. She was fantastic, in my opinion, and I would be sad to see her go. I adored Magnus and Alec’s actors as well, so they would be fun to see come back. Zegers (Alec) and Sheehan (Simon) are both TV-oriented so that gives me a good belief that they’ll return!
I’m glad they’re doing this because so much more detail can be covered. I’d prefer them to start over, however, because the movie brought in more than just what happened in the first book. It was like they tried to tie in three and it was just a bad move.
It also gives them a chance to bring in TID because, honestly, Tessa’s story was sooooo much better than Clary’s.
Also – cutting out Max was unforgivable because I love him. That is all.
Max wasn’t in the first book so that’s why he wasn’t in the first movie. Same with Robert and Maryse.
I might be in love with you. XD however I disagree about Simon. .-.
And Church…! I also liked the actress that played Clary’s mom, Joycelyn, because I think she did a great job ! They have to get Valentine right also! :O
I don’t think I’d be able to watch the show without the ORIGINAL cast. I’m just being honest and stating my opinion so don’t be rude
I’m not that bothered about what they do with the cast tbh. I liked Lilly Collins as Clary, I love Jonathan Rhys Myers in general so I’d love it if they were to keep him as Valentine but I can’t see it happening tbh. I didn’t like the actor who played Jace and the rest I was kind of indifferent towards. So whether they keep the original cast or not I’ll watch the show and try not to compare any new actors too much lol.
I hope Max is in the show, btw. I know he had a really small part in the books but I think having him there as the little brother who hates missing out on the adventures would add some great scenes imo
I loved the movie loved the cast after watching it I purchased all the book including the presequal really disappointed you won’t be making a second. But I’m happy there will be a show at least. I really really hope you will keep lily and James.
I loved the movie loved the cast. After watching it I purchased all the books made all my friends watch it. I’m really disappointed there won’t be a second, but at least there will be something I hope you keep lily and James.
Please please please make it happen. Or I’ll die waiting again. Call it melodramatic but it really broke my heart when I found out they might not do the movie sequel. TV series works better because it can portray the story better.
I loved the movie, cast, and the books !!!!!! Can’t wait. Please keep the original cast !!!!!!!!!!
Wow, a TV series. What a terrible idea. Though the 1st movie City of Bones didn’t mirror the book. I found the differences exciting. Like I knew a secret the other viewers did not. Also the story line is aimed at more than just -youth fans. And if some artistic collaborations could just happen then I think everyone would see that MI can Blow other franchises Out of the Water!
This is your chance to recast Jace!! The reason the film was not a hit! He’s meant to be an Angel like god of hunkyness, that stops people dead in their tracks (when they can see him), so cast someone who fits the bill please :) I liked the film casting of Clary and Simon, not 100% sure about Alec….
Really? Just IMO, but Jamie Campbell Bower is pretty hot and I think they got Jace right the first time.
Jamie Campbell Bower was a perfect casting for Jace- it’s just that generally speaking people have no idea what “stand apart attractive” looks like. If you stick a bunch of attractive guys in a room and it’s Jamie that stands out- for any reason (the guy is pretty beautiful) based on looks alone he was the right choice. However, he PLAYED Jace well. I’ve never been able to imagine anyone else in that role.
I would love for them to keep the original cast.. i just hope that if they do, Jamie does a tad better than the movie.. his acting seemed to forced.. like he didnt believe in what he was saying..
I really hope they don’t keep the film cast. They were hopeless! Pick better actors.
I love the books.. I was very disapointed in movie… to many details left out that were importantant and way to many changes… i really wish they would start fresh and do it RIGHT this time for the fans who truly loved the books..
The movie wasn’t the best, I’m sure fans can agree on that. Hopefully the tv show will be better. I’m definitely going to watch it. I love the cast for the movie (LOVED THEM) but please… god please no British accents. Shadowhunters are from Idris – in Europe. Just cuz they’re from Europe doesn’t mean they should have British accents. <3Malec
The City of Bones movie was fantastic. I really hope you can film City of Ashes, same cast. They were all great. I love the movie cause I have plenty experience with movie adaptations (TMI fans dont) so I liked a lot as a movie.
The problem wasnt the actors it was the producers and writers of the script.. they can do whatever they want as far as t.v. show or movies but if they dont put the original cast they will loose viewers any true tmi fan of the books and cassandra clares great mind would agree.. im already attached to the cast its the same as if they would try that with twilight, v.d., or true blood.. dont start something u cant finish..
#jace harondale # clary harondale #tmi. #cassandara clare # :)
As a true fan of the books, I disagree. I’m attached to CC’s characters, not the actors. As far as the movie cast goes there are two actors I really liked, one I didn’t think fit the part at all and the rest I’m pretty indifferent to. I like TMI for the story, not the movie cast and I think a true fan of the books would check the show out either way because they read the books for the story, not the actors.
I don’t care what they do with the cast, we’ve all imagined different faces when we read the books (unless you read them after seeing the movie) so there’s always going to be mixed reactions to casting.
From what I’ve read they are starting the story again from the show, not picking up where the film left off. So they can do what they want with the cast.
I’m more bothered about them doing a good job at adapting the book and telling the story as close to as it was written as possible. Yes casting is part of that, but I don’t think that the movie cast was outstanding so there’s not reason to think changing it will hurt the story.
I completely agree with Thalia. Honestly, I’m really hoping for a recast.
Don’t keep the cast! Other than Hodge, Luke and maybe Jocelyn, everyone else failed to meet their characters. Particularly JCB as Jace and Kevin as Alec (waaaay too old!)
I’m midway through rereading City of Bones and tbh, the changes that were made thus far into the book were minor details, some things were consolidated into single events, nothing major lost. On the other hand, I’m familiar with screenwriting and film. I thought the film was fantastic, and I think it’s a damn shame Constantin sees 90M as a loss. It deserved more. Sadly at the time it was in theatres, I was not familiar with TMI and it was poorly advertised.
You seriously think that omitting the whole explanation of the clave and covenant and basically all the polital aspects of the book were minor? What about all the explanations of what shadow hunters are and what they can do? The viewers were left completely in the dark in the movie. These are so not minor details. js.
As i said, i havent finished reading the first book yet. I also understand filmmaking more than most, and its likely had the series been guven a chance that information would have been clarified later on. Adapting a large book into a 2 hour film is a job of work. Theyre totally differebt creatures.
The series already had an established audience, enough of them to warrant a movie. The first instalment was meant to 1) GIVE THE READERS THE SATISFACTION OF THEIR CHARACTERS COMING TO LIFE and 2) make an awesome movie that would give rise to a franchise. If they wanted to expand their audience, well you have the second movie to do that, instead they found it reasonable to piss of the audience the movie was made for. When i saw the movie I was content, however as a fan of the book series i was totally UNSATISFIED!!! Did not feel the movie captured the essence of the book (aka Valentine was beyond terrible, and devoid of the character i read about), and the worst part is to offset this by including ridiculous add-ons to the movie, yes I’m taking about Bach. WTF
Im just hitting the second half now and I totally feel like a great deal is happening now that should not have been so poorly done on screen. Valentine and Dorthea were both terribly portrayed. All the back story for Luke and Jocelyn completely absent and they did all but cut Izzy out of the movie entirely- you barely see her because of how little if her was included. Im so hoping the series captures more detail, for sure.
One thing i can say the movie did? Got me into the franchise. I had no idea what TMI was until the film and now i love it. I like the film fir what it is and would have hoped fir improvement as the series progressed.
When it comes to movie adaptions of books, there’s a difference between a fan who saw the movie and then read the books vs someone who read the books first. Not that either is more valid, but someone who didn’t read the books first is more likely to have a bias towards the movie since that’s the image they already have in their heads. I personally wasn’t a big fan of the actors for Jace, Alec or Magnus , and was pretty indifferent towards the rest of the cast. I mostly just wanna see the tv series be true to the books first, over being close to the movie.
The movie was seriously terrible. It seemed like a Disney movie and completely contradicted the tone and mood of the books. It didn’t have the quick wit and sharp tongue that Cassie wrote the series with. However, I blame this on the lack of knowledge on the books by the film makers and it seemed like they were trying to please the media more than the fans. However, I have a lot of faith in the series becaue they have the chance to go more in depth and cast better people. They can make an epodsose for each of the chapters. Im really excited that it’s also by that producer because I was a fan of both Client List and In Plain Sight. So Im really hoping I won’t be disappointed again. These books mean so much to me!!!
