on facebook can tu see other peoples birthdates?

I'm thinking of getting facebook but my parents don't want me to use my real birthdate. So is there a way that people can't see someone's birthdate? And how?
And is it seguro to use your real birthdate?

(Sorry for seeming like a over protective person)

I understand precautions when being online, but with a website such as facebook, where tu should only be adding people tu know AND be setting your perfil to private, so I see no problem with using your real birthday :) It's safe.

I'm kind of curious out of all things, why tu would want to use a fake birthday...I've never heard of that one before :P

Oh and to do that: Just click on your profile, go to the 'About' section, then find your birthday section and clicking the icono to the right of it, change it to 'only me' who would view it. tu can adjust a lot of different privacy settings if tu are concerned about that.
