Scenario 2: “Dating Practice”
Thursday, September 2, 2010

Just shy of nine months since she had gone on that infamous fecha with Fred, Marlene chuckled to herself as she recalled the whole escapade. She found it funny that she had found him funny, only to learn too soon that her “Bobo” was just a run-of-the-mill buffoon. In fact, she had all but sworn off dating ever again the very siguiente day.

But could she truly hold out on dating again forever? Marlene soon pondered such a question.

Forever certainly is an awfully long time,” she then thought to herself. “Maybe I could go on a fecha again someday, but it’s really going to take someone special for me to even consider it.”

But then she had another thought.

“But what would I even do on a date?” she wondered. “Fred was the only one I ever went out with, and being with him didn’t really help me get any dating experience. If only I had some way to practice for the future so I would know how to handle myself.”

She then sat for a few moments to reflect, beginning to regret even bring up the whole thought of dating again. But it struck her after a while that maybe she could convince one of her friends to go on a mock fecha with her so that she might be better prepared to handle another real fecha someday. But who could she get to help her?

“Forget Julien, I don’t want him to think I’m ‘hopelessly in love’ with him again,” she dicho to herself. “I need the complete opposite of that -- I think I need Skipper.”

Marlene then left her habitat to go to see Skipper to see if he would be willing to take part in her practice session. She knew that he would be tough to convince, but he was the only one she could really trust for something as personal as this.

When she reached the pingüino, pingüino de enclosure, Marlene jumped into the air and tumbled down in the middle of the habitat’s platform. She landed firmly on her feet -- she always did -- and found Skipper there peering through a pair of binoculars. He put them down as he approached Marlene.

“So, Marlene, what do tu need my help on today?” he asked nonchalantly.

“Wait, how did tu know I wanted something?” Marlene asked.

“Call it a hunch, my gut, o an eighth sense,” Skipper replied.

“Um, don’t tu mean sixth sense?” Marlene wondered.

“No, I meant eighth,” Skipper replied. “My sixth and seventh senses are classified. But anyway, what can I do for you?”

“Well, I was hoping tu could do a special favor for me,” Marlene replied. “You see, someday I might like to go on a fecha again, but I’m nervous about what exactly to do on one. Going out with fred didn’t really help prepare me for the future, so I’m afraid that I might not do o say the right things if I ever went on a fecha again. So I was hoping tu could help me practice.”

“Practice how?” Skipper wondered.

“By taking me out on a mock fecha so that I could gain experience without the pressure,” Marlene replied. “If I do this with tu and make a fool of myself, at least I wouldn’t be doing it in front of a guy I’m trying to impress.”

“So you’re asking me, probably the least qualified guy in this zoo on the whole ‘relationship’ subject, to help you?” Skipper asked. “Why?”

“Because I know tu the best and trust tu the most,” she replied. “Trust me, for something like this, I’d much rather have someone I feel seguro around be the one to assist me. Someone who’d be honest and not in it for themselves.”

“Well, I suppose I could help you, as long as tu realize that I’m not dating tu for real,” Skipper stated. “So, what’s next?”

“Come to my habitat tonight for diner,” Marlene replied. “We’ll pretend that you’ve taken me to a big expensive restaurant.”

“Very well,” Skipper said. “I’ll be there.”

And with that, Marlene thanked Skipper and then left to go prepare for later that day.

At 1800 hours that evening, Skipper left the HQ to go over to Marlene’s habitat for their mock date. He stopped briefly along the way to pluck a few flores to present to her, then continued waddling along to see Marlene.

“These are for you, dollface,” he dicho as he presented the flores to Marlene. “I’m not sure what they are, though.”

“They’re dandelions, Skipper,” Marlene replied as she led him in. “But it’s the thought that counts.”

“Anything to make this whole scenario más realistic for you,” Skipper said, briefly breaking the character of Marlene’s supposed “date.”

The two then approached the mesa, tabla to begin their mock fecha together, hoping to give Marlene the confidence she needed to someday go on a real one again. Before Marlene went to sit down, Skipper pulled her chair out for her -- a true gentleman.

As they soon got down to eating a delicious tuna casserole, Skipper and Marlene began talking with ease. They laughed together. And Marlene felt encouraged por the way she made Skipper smile; he was truly playing the role of a fecha better than any Oscar-winning dramatic actor ever could.

Little did she know that Skipper had stopped actuación five minutos into the date.

Time passed quickly that evening. Before they knew it, it was already 2200. And Skipper had early training the siguiente morning.

“You know, Skipper, this evening with tu turned out to be far greater than I could have ever imagined,” Marlene said, meaning every word from her heart. “And we’re getting along so well and getting to know each other so well that I’m actually–”

But Marlene couldn’t finish her sentence. She wasn’t sure how Skipper might take it.

But Skipper smiled, knowing full well what Marlene was going to say. In fact, he finished Marlene’s sentence for her.

“… sad that this wonderful evening together is coming to an end,” Skipper said.

Marlene smiled. And blushed.

“Actually, I’m sad that this is just a mock date,” Marlene said.

“I hear you,” Skipper replied. “So I guess we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to have a real one.”

Okay…so how do I do this? I know nothing about breaking through a shell. I hear voices on the other side, concerned voices. I guess I was supposed to hatch three days ago. Well what do they expect? It’s not like I make a living out of breaking through shells. It’s not like these things come with instruction manuals, not that I could read it anyway. I tried pushing at the sides with my tiny flippers…nothing. How do other hatchlings do...

Kowalski looked up. "Who was that?"
Doris listened. "I don't hear anything."
Kowalski held up a hand, signaling her to be quiet. He listened intently.
He heard the scream again, then two gunshots.
"I heard it that time," Doris said.
"Who was it?" Kowalski asked again. Then he realized. "Hans," he said.
"Should we go see if he's alright?" Doris asked.
Kowalski shook his head. "He's Skipper's enemy."
"So?"
"So he's my enemy too."

Hans watched Skipper disappear into the jungle. "Can we not be friends, Skipper?" he whispered.
He heard someone crash into the small clearing in which he stood. He spun to...

"Kowalski! Wait! Where are tu going?" Skipper called after Kowalski.
Kowalski didn't answer, didn't look back. He couldn't stand to face Skipper and Private after he had let Rico die.

Kowalski turned to face her. "What do tu want?"
"I'm coming with you," Doris said, pulling herself up to her full height and looking him straight in the eyes.
Kowalski couldn't make himself turn her down. "You...do tu really want to come?" he asked.
"Yes."
He nodded. "Come on, then."
"Kowalski! Doris! What are tu doing?" Skipper yelled into the...

Flashback

Skipper, Karen, Katherine, Johnson and Manfredi were standing straight on the dais, everybody from the military was standing in front of them, general Xin-Jin was speaking.
"We are gathered here, to reward unusual bravery of these soldiers: Skipper, Karen, Katherine, Johnson and Manfredi. They showed Valiente when they were standing face to face with a danger. They didn't give up when they were helping their friends,...

Abigail stopped besar Kowalski.
"Ew," Rico said.
Skipper ran over and hugged her. "I missed you," he said.
Abigail pushed him.
Skipper fell on Rico. "Ew," Rico said.
Private said, "I'm confused. Can somebody tell me what's going on?"
Abigail said, "Skipper's my brother and Kowalski's my boyfriend."
"Why does Rico keep saying ew?" Private asked.
Rico dicho "ew" again.
"I have no idea," Abigail said.
Julien ran over and asked Abigail to marry him. Abigail pushed him into the pool.
Mort ran over and grabbed Julien's feet, and then they both fell in the pool. Then Skipper had to pull them out.
"Is that a yes?" Julien asked Abigail.
"No," Abigail said.
Julien started crying and walked stupidly away.
Kowalski went over and asked Abigail to marry him.
Abigail nodded.
"Ew," Rico said.
Skipper’s beak seemed to fall into the snow. Eve…was Alastair’s daughter? Why didn’t she say anything? How could she not tell him? The snow picked up again, blocking the view of Alastair and the chicks, rising high above the ground and swirling around them in another vortex of white. Once it settled again, Skipper and the owl were in a hut with a floor of snow. Alastair was sitting on a sofá with a female pingüino, pingüino de siguiente to him; his flipper was around her in an affectionate, loving way. The two chicks were playing in the middle of the room; they now looked about a año old, and Skipper...

“Eve! Who are tu talking about!?” Private called after her, him and Kowalski trying to keep up with her fast pace.

“Manor! Gah! I’m such an idiot!”

“You’re not an idiot, Eve! I should’ve suspected, too!” Kowalski pointed out.

Once they arrived at the prison, Eve stopped and turned to them. “You two stay out here.”

“What?!” Kowalski and Private dicho simultaneously.

“I know my way around the infirmary;...

Day 7

“Guys, we have a serious problem.” Kowalski reported. He, Eve, and Private were in the hut early the siguiente morning.

“What’s that then?” Private asked, a look of concern on his face.

“This guard named Manor is getting suspicious. I think he knows we’re up to something.”

“Well what do tu suggest we do?” Eve asked.

“This needs to go down soon.” Private instructed.

“Well, obviously, do tu have a plan?” Eve asked.

“Not quite. I just need a little más time. Kowalski, do tu think tu could tap into the prison security?”

“Ha! With my eyes closed and half my brain...

Private dashed into a hiding place, grasping the knife. The rocking chair was perfect! As he sat down, the door opened. Skipper shut it gently behind him. Anxiety portrayed on Skipper's face. Because he got closer, Skipper's footstep's got louder. Each thump made Private quiver.
Although it seemed Skipper was searching for something, his footseps stopped. Private poked his head out. He saw Skipper's back on his own bed. Skipper paced back and forth in the narrow walkway. He’d look out the small window in the door, and he began humming to fill the silence. Hans started to get irritated. “What’s the matter with you? Are tu having a seizer?” He asked smart-allecky.

“No! It’s just killing me not knowing what’s going on!”

“So in other words you’re starting to go crazy?”

“In a way I guess.”

“Well don’t get your feathers in a twist we’ll be out of here por tomorrow afternoon.”

“Seems like years away.”

It took only a few segundos for me to process her words before I realized she'd let go of my foot. In less than two segundos I hit the freezing water. I couldn't see..I couldn't breathe. You'd think a pingüino, pingüino de would know how to swim. I hadn't really dado it much thought up 'till now. My corazón nearly stopped when I realized I couldn't swim..and the surface of the water above me was getting further and further away. I paddled my flippers wildly trying to get to the surface. No use. I didn't make much distance and I was running out of what little breath I'd had in the first place. My lungs screamed...

Chapter 2: A Mistaken Chosen One

Once again, Private wrote down everything about the dream again. Who is this close person that will be mistakenly picked as the chosen one? he thought. He hid it under his almohada and went to sleep again.

Later in the morning, Messenger Xai Lang arrived. "Mail for Skipper."he said. Xai Lang dropped the scroll and then flew away. Then, Skipper got it. He opened it and read to see a happy news.

Dear Skipper,

Every time he'd wake up I'd tortazo him into siguiente tuesday. Finally I had to start hitting the other eye because...

It's not like I wanted to get killed por this demented dane, but I was a bit confused at him.
