I think it's because of his brother, he wants to be better then him and prove that he is a good trainer. His mind tells him to be strong and doesn't understand to mostrar amor for something. Then Ash showed up and he saw how he treats his Pokemon, tu can tell he's confused por his and hates it. He doesn't understand that mostrando amor for your Pokemon it the best thing to do. But at the end, he starts to change.
