Season 11 episode 4 Recap 

What Secrets Will Ellis Grey’s Journal Reveal? – Grey’s Anatomy – Season 11 Episode 4 – “Only Mama Knows”

As you might recall from last week’s episode, the drama was just starting up on Grey’s Anatomy. Meredith confirmed that Maggie is her half sister, while also learning that Richard is Maggie’s father and has known about the situation for a little bit. Richard tells Maggie and it all goes downhill. Callie and Arizona aren’t getting along…so who knows about the surrogacy plans.

The beginning of the episode has us watching a speech Ellis Grey made, many years ago; Meredith is watching a video of it. Then a nice narration starts about how we each have a different version of a loved one after s/he is gone.

Quickly, however, we are brought into an argument between Meredith and Derek; he’s still unhappy about her drinking entrance at the hospital. She said she just needed a day; he needs to know why. And then he tells her: You sound just like your mother.

This leads to a couple of flashbacks-one of Ellis putting Meredith down, harshly. Then it flashes to 1983, with Ellis and Richard making out. Through their discussion, we can see their relationship is very secretive.

The newest announcement? Maggie Pierce has decided to quit. Bailey, Jackson and Owen are in an uproar, deciding that she cannot quit. Even Meredith is asking Maggie why she’s quitting.

Meredith is pulled outside to tend someone sick. She sees a very young girl, who looks very pregnant and is in tremendous pain. The sight of the girl reminds Meredith of her own mother.  The 10-year-old little girl has a mass and is not pregnant.

Everyone is trying to figure out how to keep Maggie from quitting. During the course of Derek’s discussion with Maggie, she realizes Meredith hasn’t told him anything; she encourages him to talk to his wife.

Derek attempts to talk to Meredith, but it turns into a fiasco. She is still very angry at being told she sounds like her mother; she also tells Derek that she doesn’t want him there. She wants him to take the job in D.C.

Alex learns that the board voted unanimously against him. Angrily, he confronts Meredith, who actually has some harsh words for him.

Derrick confronts Maggie and learns about the sister things going on. He is happy, warm and welcoming, asking her to not leave. Maggie finds the who thing strange.

Meanwhile, Richard confides to Bailey about Maggie, who could tell there was tension between the two. Bailey is relieved it wasn’t a trickier situation…she thought Richard had sex with Maggie. Bailey encourages Richard to talk to Maggie.

Richard comes clean to Meredith about the memory of the carousel. He tells Meredith how jealous he was of Ellis. He confides that he didn’t like feeling second to her. He ended it with her that day, at the carousel, which lead to the tragedy.

At the end of the episode, Derrick talks to Meredith about her having a sister. He wants to put all differences aside. He wants her to talk to him about the situation. He also wants her to fix the relationship with Maggie. Meredith pours out her memories to Derrick.

Meredith takes Derrick’s advice and talks to Maggie. Meredith even shares their mother’s journals.
