Fans of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean film series have one major issue with it: The first film was so much better than the rest.
Luckily for all of us, Disney appears to be aware of this issue as they sail the franchise forward. New comments from co-star Kaya Scodelario (whose new film
opens in theaters this weekend) indicate that
“It [does have] a lot more of the first movie, that’s what they wanted to bring it back to,” she told Digital Spy. “[The producers] want to take it back to the beginning again. They wanted it to have this epic journey, and for it to make sense, and for it to tie things up, and also lead to new storylines.”
Her comments remind us of what Orlando Bloom said late last year: The new Pirates is going to be a “reboot” of sorts. The “new storylines” Scodelario mentions will, inevitably, lead to
film, she offered Digital Spy a couple clues about her character.
“[Carina] is an astronomer, and she is an academic,” she said. “She’s fighting for the right to study at university, because women couldn’t at that time. So she’s on her own journey – looking for the trident of Poseidon – and she has a diary with clues, and she encounters Jack Sparrow along the way, and he messes everything up. As he does. And it’s fun!”
Disney recently confirmed that Pirates favorite Orlando Bloom is returning to the film as well. The news was
welcomed by fans after his absence from the fourth film.
reads: “Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.”
