9 Disney Friendships That Withstood the Test of Time
For some of us, the holidays mean reconnecting with old friends who’ve known us since the training wheel days. And catching up with our old pals got us thinking about Disney (just kidding, we’re always thinking about Disney) and the characters whose friendships have transcended time and distance. Here are some of our favorites, in no particular order:
How precious are these two as little girls, and how wonderful is their friendship as adults? Seemingly nothing can come between them—not money, not their different backgrounds, and not competition over a man. As polar opposite as their personalities are, the important thing that they have in common is that they put each other first, and always have.
Timon and Pumbaa are each other’s other halves. They’ve transcended friendship and become part of each other’s identities, to the point that they’re completely inseparable. Anyone who finds even one lasting friendship like this in their lifetime is a lucky warthog, indeed.
This friendship is special because it withstood both time and distance. Baby Hercules and Pegasus were only together for a brief time before they were separated. They didn’t reunite until Hercules was in his teens, and somehow it was still like no time had passed at all. And isn’t that type of friendship the best?
There is truly no friendship quite like that of a boy and his reindeer. Kristoff and Sven have been each other’s best buddies since Kristoff’s first attempt at ice harvesting, before they even got adopted by the trolls. When we meet them again later on in life, they’ve become so close that they can basically talk to each other in spite of their interspecies status. We don’t say this lightly, but: goals.
Though they started off as rivals in college, Mike and Sulley evolved into the very definition of “dream team,” which just goes to show that even if you think you have nothing in common with someone, sometimes that’s exactly what will make your friendship so fun and rewarding.
Outspoken, protective Terk is the perfect best friend/basically the big sister of Tarzan. With her help, Tarzan grows into a seriously rad, self sufficient, jungle surfing guy, and even as adults they remain best friends. Their personalities may clash, but their respect and love for each other sees them through.
Just typing out the title to this movie and imagining Tod and Copper saying “friends forever” has us tearing up, and we’re not even a little ashamed. This is another example of a friendship that overcame not only the passage of time, but every other obstacle you can imagine, too. There’s so much value in that.
Sure, things got off to a rocky start when one of them (we’re not naming names) insisted he was a real space ranger and the other (again, no names) spiraled into a jealous frenzy. But the important thing is, after three
films and with a fourth one in production, Buzz and Woody remain an unstoppable team, bound by their shared leadership abilities and their complementary senses of humor.
Nakoma may not get a ton of attention, but she really is a good friend. She and Pocahontas are incredibly different in fundamental ways, and sometimes they have clashing ideas about how to handle things, but what matters is that they respect each other profoundly and support each other wholeheartedly. When things go awry with John Smith and Kocoum, neither woman blames the other, and instead, they do their best to fix it together. Now that’s magical.
