it will be helpful for my article.
Pocahontas is too, but I think almost anyone would be protective to their tribe. Thus, a great role model and inspirational character.
Whereas not many would do such things as Mulan did. She risked literally everything to save whole China and her father.
Bravery
intelligence - she was extremely quick on her feet
Loyalty, putting others above yourself
Doing what's right even when it's not what's easy, and when others will be against you - Her father yelled at her and told her to learn her place the night she ran off, her own side in the army were against her, it still didn't stop her doing what she did.
Be yourself - I know it sounds funny since she spend half the movie a man, but that adds to it. She was more herself as a man than she was in make up, and at the end she saves them all as a woman, showing what she could do as herself, not pretending to be a man, not pretending to be a girlie girl.
There's also some great stuff against sexism. Like I love her saying 'You trusted Ping, why is Mulan any different?' and how at the end she saves the day as herself, after showing everyone she was amazing and her gender didn't change that.
I also love that she was the first Disney leading lady I can think of who wasn't motivated by romance.
She's also, despite her heroic qualities, very relatable, which isn't a quality Disney prioritises in female leads. Even the relatable ones are stunning and graceful. Mulan was kind of a clumsy dork. She's not so far removed from real girls, so I think seeing someone like her do such great things it's easier for girls to relate to the positive messages than coming from some stunning, willowy graceful star.
English is not my first language, I got a little confused there. :)
Ya, she saved China but would Pocahontas not do something like that if it was required?
To me, the way pocahontas goes about things is more mature and she's more insightful.
True, but that's not her fault. She would have at least attempted to do the same good deeds dressed as a woman, but would the army have let her if they found out she was a woman early on?
Is anyone surprised by this?
Even at the end of the movie when Mulan's the hero of China she comes home quiet and shy and says she hopes that her medal brings honour to the family, like she's done something wrong.
Pocahontas throws herself infront of John Smith and says what the whole tribe is doing is wrong, telling them that this isn't the way they're supposed to act!
Also, about her having nothing to lose, I'd say your life is a pretty serious thing to lose, which is something she risked much more than Pocahontas.
I'm not trying to change people's minds or debate them, Pocahontas is great and I completely understand people wanting her to win. Since we were asked to explain our choices thought it might help to say why issues other people had with Mulan weren't an issue for me :)
Don't get me wrong Pocahontas is still very great, it was really hard to find even these reasons why Mulan is better
