Warning: This story contains major spoilers from Wednesday’s episode of
, Weller’s gone through a rough rollercoaster of emotions.
For one, Weller thought his long lost childhood friend had returned, therefore clearing his father of the suspicion that he killed Taylor Shaw. Unfortunately, that all went out the window when Jane was revealed
responsible for her death. With the betrayals mounting combined with the pressure of being the new NYO in the wake of Mayfair’s death, it appears it won’t be long before we see Weller snap.
However, that all changed during Wednesday’s episode when Weller received some unexpected but welcome news for once: His former girlfriend Allie (Trieste Kelly Dunn) is pregnant with his child.
“We did it for a couple reasons,” executive producer Martin Gero tells EW. “It was a hotly contested thing in the room because whenever a character suddenly is expecting a kid, it becomes a huge issue for fans for a lot of reasons. One, this doesn’t mean he’s going to get back with Allie. In fact, totally the opposite.”
For those who may not remember, Weller and the former FBI agent-turned-U.S. Marshal ended things last season because of Jane Doe (Jaimie Alexander), whom Allie believed Weller had feelings for. “They realized they don’t work,” Gero says. “This is, from the beginning, set up as, ‘Do you want to co-parent this kid with me?’ It’s a very modern take. He’s not like, ‘I guess we’ve got to get married now.’ They didn’t work.”
But Allie’s pregnancy will give Weller the motivation to come out of his funk. “Weller is in such a dark place at the end of last season and at the beginning of this season,” Gero says. “Finding out his father killed his childhood best friend and falling in love with the woman that you thought this person was and isn’t, he’s headed down a dark abyss.”
“It makes him start thinking about the future in a slightly hopeful way,” Gero continues. “If anything, it pulls the yoke up on his downward spiral. He’s allowed to have hope for the future in a way. That suddenly makes making sure that this group doesn’t ruin the country have stakes for him beyond himself. It’s a really positive way to help a character not be so doom and gloom for the top part of the season.”
